Poet scrambled frantically about his office. He located the scroll and the crystal he sought.

Most honorable and noble Belladonna

Since your unexpected return ... there have been many things I have thought of. I still am astonished you are alive.

Many was the night I mourned your loss.

But that was long ago.

However, I have composed a ballad about us ... place the crystal on your forehead and you will hear me sing ...

He takes out Lady Lark, his much battered lute.

Poet nods as if he were looking at Belladonna.

"From me .. ta' ye, love."

His hazel eyes close and he softly strums Lady Lark ...
Softly he says:

I hae been tryin' for hours just ta' think o' wha' exactly ta' say.
I thought I would leave ye wi' a letter o' a fiery speech
like when an actor makes an exit at tha' end o' a play.

An' I hae been dyin' for hours tryin' ta' fill up all tha' holes wi' some sense.
I would like ta' know why ye gave up an' ye threw it away,
I would like ta' give ye all tha’ reasons an’ wha’ everythin’ meant.

Well, I could tell ye "goodbye" o’ maybe "See ye around",
Wi’ just a touch o’ a sarcastic "thanks"!
We started oot wi’ a bang an’ at tha’ top o’ tha’ world,
Now tha’ guns are exhausted an’ tha’ bullets are blanks.
An’ everythin’s blank!

If I could only find tha’ words then I would write it all down,
If I could only find a voice I would speak.
Och, tis there in me eyes, och, canna ye see me tonight --
Come on an’ look at me an’ read 'em an’ weep!

I hae been whisperin’ softly, tryin’ to build a cry up inta’ a scream.
We let tha’ past slip away, an’ put tha’ future on hold,
Now tha’ present is nothing but a hollowed-oot dream.

An’ I've been dreamin’ forever hoping somethin’ would eventually come.
I saw yuir eyes in tha’ dark,
I felt yuir kiss on me lips,
I traced yuir body in tha’ air until tha’ bodies were numb.

Well, I could tell ye "good-bye" o’ maybe "See ye around",
Wi’ just a touch o’ a sarcastic "thanks"!
But now tha’ rooms are all empty, tha’ candles are dark,
Tha’ guns are exhausted an’ the bullets are blanks.
And everything's blank!

If I could only find tha’ words then I would write it all down,
If I could only find a voice I would speak.
Och, tis there in me eyes, och, canna ye see me tonight --
Come on an’ look at me an’ read 'em an’ weep!

Och, tis there in me eyes an’ comin’ straight from me heart,
Tis runnin’ silent an’ angry an’ deep!
Och, tis there in me eyes an’ tis all I can say,
Come on an’ look at me an’ read 'em an’ weep!

* spoken softly *

for all tha’ hours we'll be spending alone,
for tha’ dreams we'll ignore,
An’ all those promises we promised ta’ keep, they willna be kept anymore!
for tha’ magic tha’ our bodies had made,
for tha’ love tha’ we lost.
An’ all tha’ secrets tha’ we somehow betrayed,
For whate’er tha’ cost!
for tha’ memories still alive in tha’ bed,
for tha’ lies we believed,
An’ all the things tha’ wi’ hae never been said,
Why dinna ye look a’ me an’ read 'em an’ weep!
Tis there in me eyes an’ comin’ straight from me heart,
Tis runnin’ silent an’ angry an’ deep!

Tis there in me eyes,
An’ tis all I can say …

He slowly takes the crystal from where he had been holding it over his heart, kisses it and sends the message on.
