Merrique escorted the eager child to the Sepulcher for the weekly training led by the Warmaster. When it was announced that the group would be going out for naval exercises, her stomach lurched. It was not fear. The reality was, that Merrique discovered the hard way that seasickness came easy to her. Up until the first at-sea adventure that Umbra had taken, she had never been on any sort of ship or boat--the experience was extremely unpleasant for her and she was sick for hours afterward.
After reminding Shalcross to behave and listen to his elders, she left the boy in the care of those in charge. Stepping away from the group, she looked over her shoulder and smiled. The boy was so brave, so eager, so very much like his father. Seeing him standing there, his energy and excitement barely contained, Merri was reminded of how he came to be named.
Woe to those who shall cross him...
Merrique took her leave, and melted into the shadows. _________________

Merci watched closely as the two young ones joined the group. Willow! her voice was sharp and commanding.
Yes Merci? Willow replied a bit surprised. Shalcross and Demetria are your charges this eve. Keep them from falling overboard and try to keep them from being eaten by the Krakens.
Aye Willow said with a smile. Little did these young WIT know that they were watched the rest of the evening. Myrddin and Merci evaluating their ability to listen to commands, fight, and generally be part of the group.
To Merci these were the future of Umbra and she was always watching waiting for her investments to put out their reward.... _________________ May destiny guide you... |

Realizing she was going to be late for the evening's adventure, Demetria raced to Umbra, arriving just in time to join the 'festivities'. She was delighted to learn the group was going out on a boat.
Sea monsters!, she thought over and over in her head, barely hearing the grownups talking about being seasick, or afraid, or doing anything silly. Deme knew the rules. Listen to the people in charge, and all would be well, or at least, be well eventually.
When the Warmaster said the children would be throwing the nets that would bring the monsters, Demetria could barely contain her glee. The elven child giggled, and cast her spells, shot her bow, and giggled some more.
After all the fighting was over, bodies of deep sea monsters were strewn about the deck of the boats. A few brief words of praise were given to the group, and as children are wont to do, Demetria took the words personally.
Upon leaving the ship, she spent the rest of the evening basking in the glow of approval. |

"Demetria you watch the front, Shalcross the back" The two children did exactly as she requested.
Excellent Willow thought to herself.
"Don't let the monsters surround us!" Willow knew that this was inevitable but she wanted to see what legnths they would go to prevent it from happening.
The nets were droped and choas ensued. Demetria and Shalcross fought ferociously. Sea monster and Kraken parts flew, however, Willow needn't raise her own sword. The two worked as a team and managed their own side of the boat. When the battle was over, Willow was pleased to see that none of the monsters Shalcross summond with his net crossed over to Demetria and vise versa.
Willow, Merci and Myrddin nodded in approval. These children, young as they are had much potential.
Willow took her blade and sliced through the monsters stomach. "Any little Umbrans in here?"
"Miss Willow we are behind you!" They said. Willow smiled,
"Good work Umbralings, now lets see if you are ready for the Levithan. Back into position." She smiled at them as they dutifully readied themselves for the second wave. _________________ Malorn ‎(12:14 AM):

"Mom, mom, a seamonster tried to eat me!" shouted the child as he raced into the house after the outing Merrique had delivered him to earlier that evening. Knowing the child had way too much energy despite her and Walter's best efforts at channeling it, Merri suppressed the smile that tried to force its way onto her lips. On and on the boy went about krakens and water elementals.
Shalcross literally bounced around the room as he reveled in the stories of the night's adventures. Wondering if the boy was embellishing the truth, Merri asked him, "A sea monster REALLY tried to eat you?"
"Yeah! He tried to get that pointy eared girl too, but I covered her even though dad says..." Merrique cut the rest of the statement off with a sharp look and a gesture of her hand. Times of this extreme excitement were not the time to try to teach racial tolerance to her child, nor to give him reason to think there was derision between his parents in the matter.
Shalcross took his mother's moment of consternation as a chance to race up the stairs, feet pounding on the risers.
"Dad, dad, a seamonster tried to eat me!"
Merri rubbed her eyes and sank down onto the bench, chuckling despite her inward worries for her son. _________________

The running and screaming woke the old man Walter suddenly.
"DAD DAD DAD DAD" The boy chanted while shaking Walter.
"Yes, Yes, Yes, what is it Shal. Didn't I tell you to knock before you come bursting into my bedroom?, alright so what now?"
"Dad, sea monster tried to eat me and and and I killed a bunch of sea things and and and we jumped from ships and and and we killed more sea monsters!!!! Isn't that great dad, isn't it?!"
Walter chuckled to himself, "Yes Shalcross that's exciting, now let your old man get some shut eye, and when I wake up we need to talk about you launching arrows like a maniac and the incident with your uncle."
Shal frowns about the last incident with his Uncle Arthur and quickly runs off to harrass his mother some more. _________________

Shalcross came skidding around the corner as if he had a hell-hound on his heels, a scowl furrowed deep into the features of his face. Merrique looked up with a bit of surprise, considering how quickly his frantic joy had turned around. The boy threw himself onto her lap and she wrapped her arms around him. As she suspected, her son eventually broke the silence.
"Dad's mad at me," he declared.
Though it took a great effort to keep her silence, Merrique again waited him out; she had her suspicions as to what the problem was, but she desired to teach Shalcross accountability, and this silence demanded for him to identify his transgressions.
"He said not to barge into his room," he confessed. Merrique hugged the boy and nodded as she tangled her fingers into his hair. "You told him about Uncle Arthur?"
Merri considered her words carefully, then responded. "Yes, of course I did. You showed a terrible disrespect and acted in a dangerous manner. That won't be tolerated of an Umbran, Shal. I told you I would talk to daddy about it." She shifted her son so she could peer into his dark eyes, so like her own, set into a face nearly identical to his father's.
"We're proud of you, Shalcross. We want the best for you, and a person without discipline in their life will come to no good," she said quietly.
The little boy nodded solemnly and he asked cautiously, "Do you think Dad'll take my bow away?" Merri shook her head no and said she really doubted it. The boy gave her a grin and squirmed away from her grasp and off of her lap. "Mom, I'm starvin'. Can we eat?"
Merrique sent her son to clean himself up before sitting at the table. Her own words haunted her as she prepared his meal..."A person without discipline in their life will come to no good," she thought over and over and her mind flashed images of her own past at her.
