She was gone. There was no goodbye, no message, nothing.
It came as no real surprise to Anthraxas; he had been expecting something like this for weeks. Her demeanor toward him had altered drastically: the warm smile she usually wore had dissipated; she scarcely spoke even at the dinner table, and she had not wanted him to so much as touch her. The signs were all there that she knew something was up; that he was not her husband, though she could not prove it.
Evidently Ishtar had taken Tahira with her.
So much the better. It saves me yet another dilemma, he thought to himself. He had plans to dispose of them eventually, but this saved him the trouble.
His only concern now was how much longer he would have to continue the charade, posing as his "brother" Thrax. But relationships long established must continue for now, at least until he could concoct some reasonable tale as to the demise of his brother and his family, and his own subsequent and legitimate ascension to the governance of Alderglen.
It would take some doing, and a most vivid imagination, but he was certain he was up to the challenge. |
