After awakening from his nap, Hugh stepped out into the pub of Hanses Inn – expecting to find someone enjoying one of the varied drinks served at the establishment – and was startled to find one of the King’s harts had managed to get inside the inn. Hugh could almost taste Avita’s venison stew at Now You’re Cookin’ in Occlo; however, this creature was spared since citizens of Sanctus were prohibited from killing the King’s harts without a permit to do so. When enticement didn’t work, Hugh aggravated the creature and lured it outside the inn. A quick patrol around the city assured Hugh that things seemed to be in order in the White Gate so he returned to Hanses Inn.

A new occupant, Peter, was in Hanses when Hugh strolled through the front door. Hugh had long considered Peter to be his closest friend in Sanctus and the two joyfully greeted each other. After answering Hugh’s inquiries about the deputies in the Office of the Sheriff, Peter discussed current diplomatic relations between the Order and the vampires. Hugh thought to himself that he was privileged to have a Deputy Sheriff who was as loyal and dedicated as Peter.

As Hugh and Peter continued to catch up, a young man dressed in Sanctus Black and Gold entered Hanses. In short order, the young warrior greeted Peter in the manner appropriate for someone of his rank in the Order. The young man studied Hugh and Hugh reciprocated before giving the salute that was customary in the Order which the young man returned with a snap. When Peter made the introductions, Hugh recognized that the rumors afoot during his return to Sanctus were true – Zarlox’s son had joined the Order.

Thoughts of Zarlox made Hugh reminiscent of days past. Hugh’s biggest achievement in life had been the presentation of the Order of the Drake by King Talon in the name of Prince Zarlox. Not long after, Hugh was found in the Peg Leg Inn in a condition that had rendered him left with uncontrollable shakes, hallucinations, and a fever that threatened his life. While the healer’s were unsure what afflicted Hugh, there was a gentleman (if the patrons of the Peg Leg Inn can be called gentle) that knew of a place that provided a haven in Occlo for those who shared suffering similar to Hugh’s.

The elderly founder of the sanctuary helped Hugh in recuperation and even suggested Hugh’s original return to Sanctus; however, Hugh did not appreciate the capacity that barley wine and mead had to wreak absolute havoc in his life if he so much as wet his lips. It was not long before Hugh found himself once again in the care of the elderly gentleman. Few Sanctans knew as much about the severity of Hugh’s affliction as Malic Skyfire so Hugh took note when he received word that Lord Malic had requested Hugh’s return to duty as the Sheriff of Sanctus. Happy to return to duty once again, Hugh realized that the future of Sanctus was encapsulated in the progeny of those who had been leaders when he first donned the Black and Gold.
