She was three years old her skirt was filled with birdseed. In the yard of the orphanage she stood tossing it about. A large gander lowered its cantankerous head and plowed right at her and the tiny girl gave a squeal dropping the rest of the birdseed and running fast. Her soft blond hair flowing in the wind her bright blue eyes filled with merriment.

Birds flocked down from the trees, as they headed for the dropped pile of seeds and the girl turned smiling. The woman stood watching her. Poor little duck, she thought, this little orphan girl though older than what her husband and she were looking for held a charm about her. The animals about seemed happy, the girl was happy and it was surely an unusual sight for an orphan to be thus.

Marie smiled walking up to the lass. The womans bright red hair blazing in the sun the orphan child instinctively reaching up towards it. In that moment Marie had found her daughter. Picking the girl up the toddlers arms wrapping about her they both laughed in joy. The beautiful moment when blood doesnt matter, just love. Coming upon the scene, her husband smiled, they had tried for a child for many years and at last this couple had found their needs fulfilled.

What will you call her love? Marie smiled her eyes brimming with tears. Wren, she is my little nightingale, like a happy bird bathing in a puddle of water, chirping to the sun or moon. She is joy and merriment. He smiled, Mr. Makenna nodded. I will see the headmistress of the orphanage and begin the paperwork then? Marie smiled lifting Wren up against the sun, the toddler squirming and giggling. Aye love Wren wants to go home.

Many years past, Wren knew that her parents were not by blood her own but she cared little as did they. In time the Makennas did give birth to a baby boy. Yet he was addled of brain, and while he could do many things for himself Wren spent a good deal of time helping her mother with him. It grew wearing on Wren, she had few friends and seemed to spend most of her free moments with small creatures. Her gift with animals clear. Her joy and laughter had grown less often, there were tired circles on her face. Mr. Makenna noticed this and began to make plans.

One day her father pulled her gently aside saying to her, Wren it is time for my little bird to fly, you shant spend your life waiting in the shadows on your brother. It is time to head out on your own. I have a friend that will take you to the city of mages, and see you safely there. They have a zoo and I think perhaps if you speak to the right people you could get an apprenticeship there. The joy he had always known returned to her, her excitement overwhelming she leapt at thechance though she was hesitant due to leaving them. He shook his head he would have none of itl, she was going. So with the gold he had saved for her and a family friend she set out the next morning at dawn for Moonglow.

That is where the real adventure begins...
