As he slowly sat, his body seemed to creak more than the old chest in front of him had. With his children grown and living back in Sanctus, the last several years of retirement had been good to him and his wife. So much so, that Zarlox had fallen into the delusion that this retirement and relaxed way of life was permanent.
“I know better than that” he thought shaking his head.
But in these last months his son, Vian, had gone missing. Zarlox knew his son was still alive because of the void he could detect from Vians mind shield. A technique Zarlox himself had taught the boy. The void verified he was alive, but nothing else.
As he removed black leather armor from the chest, the aroma of sweat and dirt filled the room. Even after magical cleaning, the smell of wars long past clung to his old battle armor. Fighting back the flood of memories and emotions those smells brought back, the ancient Sanctan examined the armor he held in front of him for a few moments.
“Hmm…” he said to himself, “I hope it still fits” |

The many years they were together, Sadira could read her husband almost inside and out. She saw the look in his eyes, during the quiet moments, when he believed she was busing herself with cakes, pies or some other of his favorite food. After so many years of cooking for so many, it was still hard for her to rein in her exuberance when it came to cooking. She had taken cooking her husbands favorite, the left overs she would offer to those less fortunate than others. One evening Zarlox was bit more quiet than usual, she could see the thoughtfulness in his gaze, swallowing hard as if she could read his mind, she continues to pretend she didn't notice. She just slowly followed him standing in the doorway of their bedroom, eyes full of love, light, hope, and worry gaze upon him. She slowly moves her hands down along her gown, and walks to her husband. She places one hand upon his shoulders, the memories of him in the uniform, the nights of worry, the times they were nearly torn apart...but she was a Skyfire and needed to show the strength of one. She reaches up lightly kissing his cheek.
"You have not changed one bit in all the years we been together love. I am sure it will fit and you will be as handsome as the first day I saw you, if not more so."
She slides more to side adjusting her body, so he could see that not only did she understand what must be done, but that she would not let him go at it alone. She would forever be at his side. _________________ "Nature gave man two ears but only one tongue. A gentle reminder that he should listen more than he speaks." |
