Chapter 1
The child carried her doll throughout the manor. Servants scurried about, lest the house fall into shambles. Intricate tapestries and paintings lined the walls. Even spirits no longer lingered to haunt. For the faces of the living were forever immortalized in gilded frames banishing these immortal terrors. She too would look upon those passersby in the hall with the same indifference one day.

The Walls have too many eyes they will tell all our secrets if we aren't careful

Lilliah was gazing at a particularly menacing painting of a man. The eyes of this painting seemed to watch her every move, patiently waiting, but still ever so present. These eyes made the little girl shiver to her core, yet she was transfixed. Every pass of this painting, she spent a moment too long gazing at it. Everything else melted away, if only for a moment. Today she had scarcely noticed the maid before colliding with her.

"Oh mercy little miss, ye b'er be watchin yer steps ye could fall off the face o' the world and ye wunnit even know!” the busy maid scolded. “I haven't time ta be yer eyes. What choo lookin at thas te not see whas right'n front of ye. Almos' knock't all yer freckles off that fair face of yers child" Startled, the child dropped her doll and quickly curtsied, spouting her response.

"I am sorry ma'am, I was looking at that man there,” she pointed to the dark painting. "But if I may ma'am, he was the one staring at me!"

"Well tha's his right, innit?" You run alon' and don't let anymore pantins rob your sight" The maid picked up the girl's doll from the ground and handed it to her.

In the distance, Lilliah heard a baby cry. As she rounded the corner, she slowly peered into her mother's room. She watched cautiously for a few moments, purposefully staying in the shadows. It was her favorite game. Her mother always knew she was around as if she possessed another sense. No matter where she hid within the manor, her mother would soon follow. This time was no different.

"Come in my darling little Lily" Her mother cooed from her bed, holding the new born closely, trying to appease.

"How do you always know where I am mommy?"

"I always know where those I love are, you will learn in time."

Lilliah slowly clambered into the bed with her mother and her new little sister. As she nestled, next to her mother, she narrowed her eyes at the babe in an evaluating, curious manner.

"Momma, are you sure that Roselyn isn't just a very tiny old person? She's so wrinkly." Dhalia blinked and looked at her daughter with a smile.

"Your sister said the very same about you. You both make me smile so." The little girl beamed and quickly picked up her doll showing it to the babe.

"Momma, who is that a picture of in the hall, the one with the man that has long hair in the hall?" Dhalia's smile faltered slightly.
"Which one?"
"The one that has the big red ring" Dhalia quickly, almost forcefully regained her smile.

"An old family acquaintance that helped your great-great-great grandfather, he was a local shop keeper when they met. He sold wares that....." Dhaka trailed off trying to find the most appropriate words, "the most unusual wares, your grandfather was in desperate need of such"

"Then why do we have a picture of an old shop keeper momma?" Lilliah continued to badger on.

"Now, would you like to hold your new baby sister?" She asked holding out the babe to her daughter. The child stuck out her hands and received her sister. She dropped the doll and tried to shake the thought right out of her head. Fiery red curls shook back and forth as she cleared her head.

"Soon your picture will be up there and then you can gaze upon all that will be yours" Her mother smiled.

"But momma, this is all yours, I don't want it, I want my own things." Dhalia looked prouder still at her daughter and placed the newborn into her arms and kissed them both on the forehead

Chapter 2

Seasons came and went. Lilliah traded out her doll for school books. She, like her mother, had the power of the mind. Though her's had manifested differently than that of her mother, it was still useful just the same.

She could move objects to and fro at her whim. Though this still took a great deal of concentration. On more than one occasion she could be seen running from any number of the servants chasing her with whatever she had collide with their heads.

Lilliah, powerful as she might be still lacked the grace and discipline to master her craft. This particular day Lilliah was running from the very maid that had given her the warning those many years ago.

“Child if I have told you once, I have told you a thousand times” she began huffing and puffing after the young teen waving a rather large book about, ready to use it was a deadly weapon.

“But Ma'am, I thought you liked that story! You used to read it to us all the time” Lilliah tried to reason as she dodged a particularly close call with the book and her own head.

“I LOVE THE STORY WELL ENOUGH TO BEAT YOU FOR THE KNOT ON ME HEAD GIRL”

Lilliah knew the old woman couldn't keep up this pace forever, so with a slight bit more effort she hastened her pace and increased her lead from the angry maid. Before she knew it she had run clear off the property. The maid had cursed the child's name and warned that she like a stray cat would get hungry and come back home. She threatened that her eventual whipping would commence upon her return.

Her legs didn't stop, even when they had reached the forest's edge. She weaved through the trees like the wind on a blustery day. She felt each tree as she rushed passed, the rough bark biting into her soft skin.

Lilliah had been so focused running through the trees that she had paid no attention to what was between them. She hit something solid that had been right in front of her full force and tumbled with it to the ground. Winded, she clutched her side, catching her breath. She tried several times to roll over and see what had so painfully broken her stride.

As she moved toward the seemingly dark mass, she froze when she heard it grunting with pain. It dawned on her that what she had run into wasn't a 'thing' at all, but a person. She lowered her head defeated. Her hair hung like a blood red curtain hiding her shamed face. She couldn't be sure who it was that she collided with this time. Maybe the cook she hit with the butcher knife earlier this morning? She was uncertain of whom it was but she was certain that she was going to be punished.

She closed her eyes and kept her head lowered, ready to receive her rightful punishment. Lilliah could only hear the crunch of leaves and scraping of earth as the person rose to their feet before her.

“I am sorry, I didn't see... I was just practicing...” They both began

To her surprise the person chorused what she had said. Her head shot up and she opened her eyes wildly to see a boy before her. He turned to face her just as surprised as she.

“Er...hello... “He began, clearly trying to still understand the situation.
“Hello” she replied blinking as if she couldn't believe her eyes, certain that they were fooling her.
The boy gazed at her a moment and blinked at her as he idly dusted himself off. Lilliah remained on the ground not quite believing her fortune.
“Where are my manners?” He stated more than asked and extended a hand out to Lilliah. She took the opportunity to finally study the boy in front of her. The boy was no more than a year or two older than she The school uniform he wore suggested that he was of a wealthy upbringing. He had ghastly white skin, as if it had never seen the day light. His face chiseled and sharp. Despite the harshness of the angles of his face, he still had a benign smile that seemingly lit up his sapphire eyes as she slowly put her hand into his and pulled herself up from the ground.

“I'm Nikkolas Trumain”
“Lilliah Caldwell” she replied with a smile in return.

“So Lilliah, Caldwell, what were you doing running through the forest so distracted that you didn't see me?”

She bit her lip, “Running from an angry maid with a big book that I hit her in the head with”

“Why did you hit your maid?” Nikkolas asked amused.

She quickly explained her gift. Nikkolas didn't laugh right away, only held a slight smirk.

“What are you smirking at? What were -you- doing here that you didn't have enough sense to get out of the way?”

“I …. er... .well....” He sighed “I was trying to bring back our family cat Maulkin”
“What? How? Did it run away..?”

He shook his head in response and said “Old family remedy. It's too late now, he's too far gone”
“Oh, I am sorry” He shook his head again “It's alright; he was a dreadful creature. I only tried because my sister Myla cared for him so.” Unsure how to respond, she just sat there.

“Well Lilliah Caldwell, I think both of us should get going” I can escort you, do you live far?”
“No, I live in the manor right over there” She pointed to the west.

The boy whistled, “you are -that- Caldwell aye?” he said as he saw where the girl was talking about.

“Very well, we ought to get going. So Tell me more about your gift” He encouraged as they made their way back.
