Posted: Fri Jan 23, 2004 2:56 pm Post subject: Racial Standards (A rough draft) |
|
Given that many people have varying opinions on different races perhaps maybe I can help to a degree. keep in mind that these are my own opinions and views and not that of any of the guilds in question. I invite demi human guilds(ie. Elf, Orc, Drow, Dwarf and so on) to place in a reply to this post, what standards they seek in their own members.
If there is a descrepency with my views and that of another, I am willing to compromise to form a better standard for the shard as a whole.
As for a Vampire, which I play, These are the standards I go by.
1. Under no circumstances do you ever tell anyone you are a vampire while in game. The reason for that is if everyone knew you were a vampire by you stating it, no one would hang around you and you'd starve.
2. Vampires are masters at deception. Often promising one thing and delivering another. Be it information, items or even a simple promise.
3. Vampires never do anything without it benefiting themselves first. If there is no benefit, there is no reason to waste your time.
4. Vampires always seek power. They must have control of everything. When they don't, they spend their time setting themselves up for power.
5. Some of the best Vampires I've ever met I still don't know are vampires.
6. The art of siring another requires the following:
Two bites within a 48 hour period but atleast 24 hours apart. First is to drain the victim of vitality. The second is to take the life.
Next is to give 3 drops of vampiric blood into the victims mouth. The blood is absorbed and the victim is now an underling to the host.
Various rituals may take place before or after the initial cross over, but in general, this gives the victim a fighting chance to be saved in the UO world.
7. There are certain things a vampire is immune to in the UO world.
Daylight and Garlic are the only two I go by.
8. Blessed holy symbols, silver weapons and wooden stakes will only make a vampire run for survival. It will not permanitly kill the vampire (A wooden stake removed from a vampire's heart will bring the vampire back)
9. Given that there are also many types of Vampires out there, I mainly go by vampires in a general sense. Even though I am a baali (A Vampire who worships daemons) I still stick to the general rules of a vampire. The baali just adds flavor to my persona.
10. Once your a vampire, there is no going back. I have had two blood transfussions and I still fail to be human. Not all vampires love themselves. Many seek ways to destroy themselves and will use any means nessesary to achieve it. even if it requires mass destruction.
11. Vampires regenerate at a rapid pace. Immune to pain and fear unless the items stated above are present, A vampire who has been beheaded is not dead. In a matter of hours that vampire's full form will be complete and it will be just as strong as it was before.
12. Vampire fangs can be controled at will. If a vampire chooses, his/her fangs can and will apear normal to the normal eye of a human.
13. Even though it seems vampires are indestructable, they can be killed. it is up to local folklore and trial and error to find them.
14. A vampire who has not taken blood of another for a long time(I base it off a month) will fall into a defenseless sleep (skin will apear as hard leathery black and the body will apear empty of organs.) Blood will revive the vampire after a 48 hour period of gathering strength. The vampire should not be moved during this time.
15. Vampires are choosy when it comes to siring another. They look for certain traits that are favorable to them. someone comming up to a vampire asking to be sired WILL be disapointed.
16. Those that are sired, tend to be given a secret name from their masters. it is a name that is considered sacred among vampires. One who is sired by a vampire is called a childe of that vampire. It is considered forbidden for the childe to refer to their sire by their vampiric name. Instead, they greet their sires as Master or Mistress, and if in public, by the sire's given name. |

Great essay.
I would do one about humans but I am not inspired yet... and humans are very varied...
I -could- do one on Humanis, but that would spoil all of our secrets.
So I shall abstain and admire this piece of work. |

What a good essay! I have always been extremely confused about the vampire lore that is RPed on Atlantic. *you hear Arcana muttering to herself... any vampire that looks like Aragorn is welcome to nibble on me anyday...* |

I like all of it, except for retractable fangs. Seems a bit god-modish to me. What I tend to do on my vampire is just keep from speaking in crowded areas, being in a spotlight, and if I must I tip my hat down. Same principle, little more 'realistic'.
Other than that, awesome essay. _________________

The problem with having fangs that can be seen at any time is people would abuse it. So my character hates Kotare OOC, ingame I find him, emote *sees fangs as Kotare speaks* and boom can reveal hes a vampire to the world. _________________

What I am stating is that the canines of a vampire can grow up to an inch in length often reaching halfway to the chin. Most vampires however are not so bold to expose their fangs unless they are about to feed. So they keep them shortened so as to make them look like an abnormal length of a human's canines
In other words, if you were to speak to me while I wish to conceal them. they would still be pointed teeth, just short enough where you would have difficulty noticing them. catch me while I'm feeding and I'd have a hard time explaining them much less the victim in my hands. |

All very nice idea, the time limits and minute details on making new vampires seems a bit of micro-management for me, seeing as very few new vampires are being created now a days anyways...
I also don't like the idea of being "immune to pain", probably just more tolerant to it.
Retractable fangs, I say up to the individual discretion of the player.
Other than that I like the general description of vampires in the beggining excellant work. *coughs "Republicans!" coughs*
(don't be offended, I am one) |

Think of it this way, does a dead man need to worry about dying? No, because he already has. Pain is a nerve sensation. When the body ceases to function, the nerves cease as well. Therefore pain is never felt. Now I can explain this and that to no avail because there is actually no way to prove that and I'm not about to go test that theory.
So I simply stated that when a holy symbol, a silver weapon, or a wooden stake was present, I would apear much more nervous and be looking for a means to escape.
Holy Symbols would burn me. Silver weapons make it harder to regenerate the wounds and a well placed wooden stake will turn me to ash save for my skeleton.
As for the siring process, its just a generalized process. Some vampires would make it more time consuming, others just a simple bite, bite and
3 drops of blood and there is your instant vampire. I myself tend to put a little effort into some form of ritual to welcome the new vampire to their new unlife.
*wonders what happened to the other races posting their standards in a reply to this post* |
