Claudette liked going to Hanse’s hostel and thinking about her night there with Melior. Since he had proposed there, she had begun to frequent there more often in hopes of maybe seeing him. After going to their house and checking on a few things, she spoke the words that would take her to the hostel. She walked in only to find there was not a friendly face in the bunch. She only recognized Ceinwyn. Once again the mere sight of the drow woman gave Claudette a very unpleasant feeling and so she decided to leave. As she walked out the door she noticed a woman in a kasa walking up to her. She lifted her kasa lightly and Claudette was very surprised to see it was her cousin Brianha. She whispered to her and soon Ceinwyn and the man she had been sitting with joined them. Turns out it was her son. He was an unpleasant fellow but Claudette wasn’t surprised in the slightest about that. After all, he shared genes with Ceinwyn.
Ceinwyn told Brianha about Vaen’s unfaithfulness. She listed a few names of women Vaen had allegedly cheated on her with and so naturally this angered Claudette. She began to ask Brianha why she even bothered and her cousin only pleaded with her to not ask questions at the time. Claudette stopped for the moment but knew that Brianha would have a lot to explain.
After a few more unpleasant remarks from Ceinwyn and her son, Brianha and Claudette left. Brianha insisted they needed to go to a private place where they could talk freely and so Claudette followed her cousin to the house of Master Tai’s sensei. A bit surprised by the place but eager to get some answers, Claudette angrily asked Bri what this was all about.
At first Brianha wanted to tell her very little and this angered Claudette even more. She knew by the look in Brianha’s eyes that this was something very big and insisted that she tell her. Brianha sighed heavily and told her she had stabbed Ceinwyn in a moment of rage and that Ceinwyn had retaliated by knocking her unconscious and bringing her to the Order. Claudette listened in disbelief as her cousin recounted how they had spared her life in exchanged for her serving Oblivion. As it began to sink in that her cousin was now trapped by the darkness, Claudette grew livid.
Clenching her fists and standing up angrily, Claudette shouts, “This is all because of Vaen. That bastard beats you almost to death and now because you want to “help” him, he’s gotten you into this mess. What is it about him?? Why can’t you see that your life will be better without him in it??
Brianha sat there looking down and not saying anything. Claudette could see that this was hard on Brianha. She loved her and wanted to protect her but she couldn’t help the anger that was building inside of her knowing there was little she could do for her. Brianha had warned her of the danger and that she mustn’t get involved. Claudette knew she would have to be very careful and that Brianha had to be even more careful while in public. She hoped that Tai’s sensei would be able to help Brianha control the sense of darkness that was quickly invading her mind.
Brianha warned her that at times she might become someone different and dangerous and that Claudette should be weary of her and accept nothing she offers her. It was hard for Claudette to accept but she knew this was Bri’s battle to fight. She could only stand by her and support her. She was glad when Bri told her that there was a man looking out for her. His name was Kay and she could tell by the way Bri was talking about him that he brought her cousin a sense of peace. Claudette insisted on wanting to meet him and Bri acknowledged that would be a good idea. After a long and emotional conversation, Claudette reassured her cousin. “We will get through this together, we always do.” The women then retired to their homes for the night.
Claudette was restless that night. Thinking about the danger that now enveloped Brianha, she could only direct her anger at one single person. Vaen Swiftar! _________________
