Ashford's mother, Einya, was illegally sold as a slave to a local gambler while Ashford was still very young. Ashford's father, Jeryan Yendorin, while on his trade route caught notice and through bartering personal cargo and gems his father bought her freedom.

Jeryan settled after his return voyage with Einya. As a member of the Sailors' Guild, Jeryan built vessels in the shipyard for majority of Ashford's youth. Ashford was primarily raised by his mother and her tales of the Sea of Grass, or the city of Tristan rang through his waking hours when he wasn't beside his father in the shipyards. By his sixteenth year, his first trade voyage made him a man. Ashford, affectionately named by his seafaring peers as "Ash", would spend the next nine years voyaging the trade routes, residing for a short period in many small port side villages to build ships alongside his father. A year after returning home his father died due to a fall from a scaffold in the shipyards. Ash's mother, died shortly after the same year suffering severe food poisoning.

As an only child, he focused on his studies in intelligence gathering and philosophy. His mother providing care at the Yew Library allowed his mind to wander. In his free time and to make money while attending school he cared for the local domesticated animals. Asking a favor from a friend of his father, Ash gathered his belongings, to include his mother's heirloom, a small topaz pendant that was hand made etched by her father, and a gift to his father for his last birthday by his mother, a 12 year old male Rainbow Magpie named Jay - Ash entered the wettest winter to date in seek of a place to resettle. Ashford advises and writes history of the tales from weary adventurers. His books can be found occasionally gracing the shelves of some of the most notable libraries in all the lands.
