Chapter I: The Calamity

Born of the complete and true noble blood of House ap Waels, Nathan was an ambitious young apprentice knight of Virtue. His father, Joseph ap Waels, was a prominent and notable Sage of Virtue, residing in the walls of the great city of Britain. The House of ap Waels family stretched across the world in Sosaria; though the major and important icons of the family still lived and reigned in Britain, under Lord British’s ruling. Nathan’s immediate family included a mother, Lady Sara ap Waels, and a younger brother, Alexander ap Waels.

Joseph was appointed as the grand teacher for the Sages of Virtue, and spent most of his time traveling to and from the Lycaeum. He taught classes there, and he was respected throughout Sosaria for his virtuous teachings and deeds.

During these months, with Nathan still growing and learning, he was separated from his father and took further interest in the ways of the Knights of Virtue. Most of his time was spent in the Chamber of Virtue in Britain, speaking with monks and the like. It was there, he would meet the figure that would change his life eternally. The young son of the sage encountered Lucien Lasombra, a rather notorious knight in the city of Britain. It was rumored he was one of the knights to capture some of the Followers of Armageddon; later, Nathan would find out, it is true these are most likely rumors. The wise and arrogant Lucien had little time for Nathan, though Nathan begged for an opportunity.

On Joseph’s return from the Lycaeum one evening, Nathan informed his father of the new master he had. Joseph, the all-knowing Sage, warned his son to stay away and to not meddle in the Lasombra’s affairs; Joseph knew the true rumors of Lord Lucien. Nathan listened to his father, though stubborn and eager to become a Knight, did not obey these words.

Lucien taught Nathan much on the Virtues, though little was understood. Lucien spoke of the Eternal Virtues, and concepts of British being a false king. Nathan, traumatized by these statements of his former glorified hero, does not truly acknowledge them.

Joseph was informed of his son’s ongoing apprenticeship, and became angered. Joseph sent letters to the commanding lords residing in Britain, informing them of the treachery that Joseph knew Lucien was committing. Lord Lucien Lasombra was outcasted from the Society along with his fellow knights.

Several years passed…

On a particular rainy evening, with the full moon bright and high in the sky, Joseph returned to Lord Blackthorn’s Castle, knowing he could find his noble son Nathan there. Something was strange on this night; the guards had abandoned their outposts, and there was only silence in the castle. The sage cautiously approached the door, with his robe, now heavy from the rain, being carried by him. With several loud slams on the door, it slowly creaked open. The castle was not lit at all, and Joseph picked up a candle, lit and began walking through it.

Up stairs, he could hear slight commotion. He walked up the stairs slowly. As he climbed the steps, more of the picture was visible. The new members of the Knights of Virtue were chained and circled by the older knights: Lucien’s knights. Lucien preached arrogantly, blade in hand, intimidating the bound knights. Through the darkness, Joseph could see his son’s bright blue eyes, the trademark of the noble House ap Waels, glowing with fear.

Without hestitation, Joseph quickly gave a shout to his fearful son.

“Nathan!”

The corrupted shadow knights quickly shot their heads to the stairwell, and Lucien’s face turned to a complete smirk. He gave a simple nod, and the knights walked over to Joseph, as he scrambled to run back down the stairs, and quickly restrained him. As they dragged Joseph back upstairs, Lucien angrily ranted to him:

“You ruined the life of the true noble knights! Ah, I know, dear Joseph, it was you! Yes, I know it was –you- who penned those letters to British and the Council. You have ruined –me-, Lucien Lasombra. For this, you must pay.”

Joseph shook, terrified by the growing anger. He knew what Lucien was capable of.

“P..pl… please, all I ask… is you spare the blood of my son. Allow him to live.”

Lucien gave a wicked smirk, before drawing a blade and stabbing it through one the bound knights. The blade struck deep, it penetrated the wooden floor beneath. The noble knight seemed to gasp for air, before his head fell back, and blood dripped from the corners of his lips. The knight’s head circled around some, and Lucien violently grasped his hair. He leaned down slightly, his eyes still locked on Joseph, and quickly bit the neck.

The knight gave a small moan of pain. Lucien snapped his neck as he released him, and wiped the blood from his lips. Nathan, still bound, tugged on the chains and gave angry screams.

“You will pay for this! Innocent blood cannot be simply spilled, you vile creature!”

Lucien laughed mockingly, and approached Nathan. He gripped his neck firmly, and spoke softly.

“You are still mortal, and unaware of the true world around you, my apprentice.”

Lucien glanced over to his knights, and with a smirk, his followers drove Joseph into the wall, each of them finding a place to bite. Joseph screamed in pain. Nathan tried to extend his hand as he too screamed, but he could not. Again, Lucien simply laughed. Nathan was rendered unconscious by a simple blow to the head with the hilt of a sword.

He awoke, bound in the same place, though pentagrams of blood and symbols of evil surrounded him. He found himself alone in the circle, at least the only alive one. His father was chained to a wall, nearly naked, with his still damp garments slightly torn now. His full grown beard was covered in blood, as was his bruised and ruined body. He could barely hold his eyes open as he stared at his son.

Nathan remained in complete silence as a single tear dripped down his cheek. Suddenly, a commotion of movement was heard on the lower floors, and up the stairs, the corrupted knights marched, returning. They had different garments on, however. They were draped in shadow robes.

Lucien approached Joseph slowly. He leaned in close, murmuring to him:

“I will… allow your son to live.”

Joseph nodding slowly, whispering in return:

“Th… than… thank you…”

The vampires circled Nathan as he sat motionless in the center of the pentagram. Lucien emerged from the crowd and approached Nathan. He lowered himself to Nathan’s level slowly.

“You will be eternal, a shadow knight, a descendant of the Dark Father Zemyaza, my apprentice,” he whispered in Nathan’s ear. Nathan’s blue eyes widened.

Lucien leaned in further, his sharp fangs penetrating Nathan’s neck. Nathan fell unconscious.

When Nathan awoke, the world had changed. He glanced around the room: it was now empty, except for his hanging father, dead. A single tear dripped down his face again, though this time, it was blood.

Nathan wiped it, and was in shock. His senses were heightened slightly, he could hear the corrupted knights below, and he could smell the rich of aroma of blood. He rose slowly, his face was stern and cold.

The corrupted knights were tossing around what appeared to be a woman. His anger grew with every passing moment, and the knights were unaware of his presence. He drew his blade, charging at them violently, swiftly maneuvering and slicing through the crowd. The others drew their blades as well, though Nathan, bent on revenge, cut through them with ease.

He stood alone, in a room of bodies, his blade covered in blood. He sighed lightly, glancing to the door.

“I have become what I previously despised..."

Nathan, saddened and isolated from his precious virtuous society, found peace only within the darkness of the sewers. It was there he found his first own meal, a sewer rat. The overwhelming events of the past day had definitely changed him, and he felt the change.

The only thought on his mind was Lucien, and revenge. He had slaughtered the remainder of the knights, though it mattered little; his only target was Lucien. His blood within boiled as thoughts of Lucien’s destruction circled his mind.

He had become all that Lucien had told him he would: Eternal, a shadow knight, and a member of the cursed Zemyazan blood.

Chapter II: The Vengeance

It had been several weeks since the corruption of the young knight, and still he remained within the sewers, secluded from all. The thick stench of death reeked within the small and infested halls. He sat alone, the swamp-like liquid flowing slowly beneath him. His former tan skin had become slightly pale, and dirt and the like covered his face. His former rich long ebon hair, now was soaked in the water filled with rodent excreta. His garments, torn and stained, reeked of the death he had brought upon the now vacant sewers.

It was time for him to move on. There was more than life below the ground.

No, no… I cannot depart from these walls of death, surely, should I leave, the stench will follow with me everywhere I go.

Suddenly, he felt an overwhelming feeling, like nothing he had experienced before. His bright blue eyes seemed to illuminate, lighting up the dark hallways of the chamber of death. He reached his hands for the sliver in the wall above him, pulling himself up slowly.

As he climbed out of the sewers, he glanced around, to ensure the citizens of Britain would not catch sight of him. He pulled his damp robe over him tightly; the wind was cold on this day. Rain began to pour down softly, and single drops landed themselves on his face, beginning to wash away the dried dirt from the sewers.

He walked through the city casually, though his blood and dirt stained garments were quite conspicuous. He walked, watching and observing the citizens as they also watched him, and he looked to the wall. There was a missing person poster with his sketch. He frowned, and ripped it off the wall.

He approached the former sanctum of his existence: The Chamber of Virtue. All he knew of the Virtues was simply a lie, a tale to mask the sinister and lurking evil beneath the surface of the concepts.

Nathan followed the Lucien's tracks throughout Sosaria for nearly a full year. He had finally caught word that Lucien had now moved to Nujel'm, and was planning to restore his former of Order of Corrupted Knights. Nathan ordered for a ferry to the island, and he finally set sail East, to the Lands of Sand.

After reaching his destination, he knew where Lucien would be. As he approached the Nujel'm graveyard, he saw in the distance, a black-robed figure. Nathan smirked as he withdrew his blade. Lucien walked into a sandstone hall. This was the time.

From there, an epic battle raged. Nathan fought fiercely, but was simply no match for the years of experience Lucien had. Lucien had cornered him over the sarcophogus, his blade to his neck.

"Allow me to teach you the ways of the Father, my apprentice," Lucien spoke mercifully to Nathan. Nathan's blue eyes illuminated and he gave a slight growl. "Very well," Lucien said as he drew his blade high in the hall.

Nathan quickly rolled over, holding his blade up as Lucien's torso came crashing down into it. Lucien gasped for air as blood dripped from his torso.

"My apologies, Lucien. It seems your reign ends here, fool." Nathan said, smirking wickedly. Lucien fell to the floor, and Nathan withdrew the blade violently. Lucien was unconscious.

Nathan sat there, laughing slightly, knowing that his vengeance was complete. He had destroyed all those that had caused harm to him and his family. He picked Lucien's body up as he slid the sarcophogus lid off. It was vacant. Perhaps this was where Lucien rested now. Regardless, the corpse of Lucien, now in Tor Por, was placed within the tomb. Nathan knew, now that Lucien was weakened, he surely would be unable to open the sarcophogus for himself. He slid the heavy stone lid over the sarcophogus once more reassuringly.

Though he avenged his father, Nathan was still changed. He could not reverse this, and he could not live among his former society any longer.

Nathan, draped in robes, remained in Britain for several years. He watched the effects of mortal aging on his mother, until the day came that she would pass away. It seemed as though all would pass away, and Nathan accepted this fate of the others: death. He, however, was untouched by these things, yet remained closer than any other could ever be.

He wandered the lands for several years, moving to Moonglow, then to Vesper, but finally found a home in Maginicia. He joined the Mage's Guild, however, he was nothing of a mage anymore. Something more sinister and dark was within him, he learned of his skills as a vampire. He took a slight interest in necromancy, but remained a secret most of the city. He watched always, from the darkness.

Several more years passed, and Nathan has no interest in life anymore. He had become emotionally hardened and felt no mercy for any being on Sosaria any longer. Late one evening, during a stroll through the city as he regularly took, a voice whispered to him.

Qur ralde xa da Tazenkof.” it whispered. Nathan, though unfamilar with the language, knew what it spoke of. “You are of the Skull.”.

...

His blue eyes glowed again as he walked through Umbra, seeking what had called to him. He felt a strange presence in the town, and the citizens watched him carefully. It seemed as though they knew.

...

Approaching the cemetery, he looked up to the peak. There was a pedestal, and upon it, a black skull. He stepped casually and slowly up the steps, unaware of what this would bring. The night was abnormally dark, and the shadows followed him. This was not uncommon however for the young corrupted knight, he was used to the shadows and darkness alike.

He stepped up to the highest level, and approached the darkened skull.
