The midwife looked at the priestess, and smiled. “Just a little more, dear.” She said, and looked at the man holding onto the priestess’s hand. “Have you thought of a name?” she asked.
“We thought, if it is a boy, Dorian. A fine, strong name,” he said, smiling down at his wife. He brushed aside a strand of blond hair from her face.
“And if it is a girl?” the midwife asked, looking curious.
“Hmm… I never thought it would be a girl.” The man looked at the midwife, his brow furrowed, and his blue eyes unsure. He then shrugged. “Doireann, I guess.”
His wife laughed, and then screamed, pushing down. After much coaxing the midwife smiled, and looked at the two. “Doireann,” she said smiling, and proceeded to clean the child.
“It’s a girl?” the father asked, and looked slightly panicked. “Desdemona, I don’t know what to do with a girl.” He ran a hand through his red hair, and looked at his wife, lost. His wife just laughed, and patted his hand.
“Marcus, dear, don’t worry. You’ll be a fine father.” Desdemona shook her head, laughing. “This one just won’t be a warrior like her daddy, that’s all.”
Marcus smiled down, and kissed his wife’s forehead. “You are right, my dear. She will instead be the greatest priestess of virtues that has ever lived.” Desdemona just laughed.
“Well, whatever she is, she still has to to be fed.” Reaching for the baby, she looked down at it, and began to frown. “My poor baby,” she said, holding the child close to her.
“What is it? Desdemona, what is wrong?” Marcus looked down at Desdemona, worried.
“I can only tell you that she will work towards the light; her heart will remain true to the light. However, the rest…” She shook her head, and held her infant even closer. “I looked at her and saw a light shining within pure darkness, and the light never fading, but merging with the darkness. She will not have an easy life. We must teach her everything we know, so the light can win against the darkness in the end.”
“But… but… I know nothing but wielding a sword. What can I teach her?”
Desdemona smiled, and stared at Marcus, her green eyes unwavering. “You will teach her how to wield a sword, of course.” |

Running, holding onto his wife’s hand, Aloxinamis turned the corner, and ran up the steps into a small hovel.
“Why are we running?” his wife asked, her purple staring at him. “Lox?” she said, shaking him when he didn’t respond.
“They know my real name,” he said, panting, his red tail twitching in frustration.
“Who?”
“The dark ones. They found out!” Aloxinamis stared at his wife, and caressed her shoulder. “Rosemary, if I disappear, or am gone, go. Get out of here, and find someplace peaceful to raise our babe. She will need to be guided in light. I do not know how much longer I have, but keep our babe safe. She will need a shorter name, so no one knows her true name. Xandria or something close to that.” He stood up, and stared out the window, his deep red gaze seeing more than what was there. Quietly, he said a few words, and a book appeared within his hands. “Give this to her. It contains all the knowledge I have, and the true names of those who betrayed me. It will come in handy, and it may save her life. She will need you, more than anything. Remember that.”
Rosemary took the book, and read the cover to herself. “Diaboli Magus,” she whispered. “Wait, what do you mean, betrayed?” She bit her lip, shaking her purple hair in confusion.
“Those names written in there are the ones who discovered my true name, and mocked my praising the virtues. Well, vengeance shall come to them, in the form of what they scorn: my daughter, the half-breed’s half-breed." He looked up suddenly, frowning. "They come. I shall see you again, in the next life. Until then, my dear,” he turned to her and kissed her deeply, “I bid you, adieu. Remember, I love you, more than any mortal ever could.” Then, with a flash in his blood-red eyes, he disappeared.
Rosemary fell to her knees and began sobbing, holding the book close to her. “I love you too,” she whispered, staring at the place her husband had stood, knowing he was lost to her forever. |
