The sun was beginning to lower in the sky and a soft breeze gently blew back Mallory’s hair. Mallory knew Gailan would be home soon and that gave her much joy. Earlier in the day he had contacted her and asked that she meet him and they would have dinner together and discuss plans for the paladins and their wedding. Their bond had only continued to grow stronger, and the times apart from him were hardly bearable.
Mallory sat and closed her eyes and listened to the melodic babbling of the fountain. She let the soft summer breeze blow her hair and felt the sun against her face as she began to day dream. She opened her eyes and looked up as she felt Gailan’s hands on her shoulders. A soft smile crossed her lips as he leaned over and kissed her softly on her cheek and moved to sit beside her. He reached out and took her hand in hers and entwined his fingers with hers. Again she was amazed with the comfort she found in the touch of this man.
They began discussing the paladin division and the recent promotions and ideas for quests. Suddenly she had a feeling that her sister and friend Rryn needed her help. "Rryn and Tai need our help.." She looked at Gailan and he nodded slightly without saying a word. He was able to read her mind and they had a way of communicating without saying a single word. Mallory looked at Gailan with apologetic eyes and said, “I suppose our quiet evening will have to be postponed…” Gailan looked at her and shook his head, “There is no need to apologize my dear. I am sure that one day we will have our quiet evening.” Gailan stood and held his hand out for hers. She gracefully stood up and leaned up to kiss him gently on the cheek. She whispered in his ear, “I love you.” Gailan smiled tenderly down at Mallory and said in a low voice, “and my dear, I love you.” Mallory returned the smile and closed her eyes and concentrated on traveling to Zento, where Rryn was at.
Mallory opened her eyes as she and looked around her surroundings. She was shocked at the change. Zento was a lovely island, all the beautiful trees and flowers. The wind whipped furiously at her hair and cloak. She looked around and found Gailan nearby and they made their way to the town square where they found Rryn and Tai anxiously trying to evacuate people. Mallory gave Rryn a quick hug and lowered her head respectfully towards Tai. She instinctively reached out to take Gailan’s hand, and found his already coming towards hers. Mallory looked up and smiled softly and caught Rryn’s approving smile and her smile turned into a grin and she squeezed Gailan’s hand softly.
Rryn and Tai began to explain the dire situation to Gailan and Mallory. They told her of the monsoons that were upon them and how they were trying to evacuate as many people as possible before the storms hit the islands. As she listened, Mallory gazed around and watched as people hustled about boarding up windows and preparing themselves for the storms about to hit the islands. Her heart went out to these people. She thought to herself that she wished there was something that she could do. Mallory looked up at Gailan and he quietly nodded to her and looked back to Rryn and Tai. As she listened to Gailan offering their aid she realized again how much she loved this man. They had planned to spend some quality time together, but here he was selflessly offering to help others in need. Gailan looked down at her and his voice softly filled her mind “You my dear are just as selfless.” A soft flush crossed her cheeks and she looked back to Rryn and Tai.
After a few moments Rryn and Tai invited Gailan and Mallory to join them for tea. They agreed and followed them to the local inn. Mallory watched as Rryn removed her sandals and gracefully kneeled on one of the pillows. She looked at Gailan and then followed Rryn’s lead. She watched as Gailan tried to do as Tai and she smiled up at him. She caught Rryn’s eye and they grinned. As they sat around the table she listened as Tai explained the Tokuno culture. As they sat she came to the conclusion that their cultures could learn much from each other and she discussed her idea with those around the table. Everyone seemed very enthusiastic about the idea, and Gailan said “What would I do without this woman?” To this Mallory replied with a soft smile “You would walk about with a tea stained kamishimo.” Gailan looked down at his kamishimo and everyone including him laughed softly.
As they finished their tea, Gailan and Mallory made plans to return the next day and assist with the last of the evacuations. Rryn and Mallory exchanged quick hugs. Gailan extended his hand to Mallory and they made their way to Mallory’s home. As they stood in Mallory’s home, they talked about the next day’s plan. Mallory tried to contain herself, but a small yawn escaped her. Gailan leaned over and lightly kissed her and bid her a goodnight. As she watched him leave she sighed softly. She looked forward to the day that they would be married and he would not leave her side.
She made her way to her room and readied herself for bed. As she laid in bed her mind was again filled with Gailan's low voice Rest well my love. I believe we shall have much ahead of us tomorrow. She smiled slightly, appreciating his concern for her. She responded to him Sweet dreams. I love you. With that she fell into a deep sleep. _________________ Good friends are like stars. Mallory looked around the city of Zento as she made her way up the path from the moongate. She barely recognized the city. The peace and tranquility of the island had disappeared with the arrival of the early winds and rains. She watched as the citizens of Zento worked to try to protect their homes and businesses. Mallory lowered her head and held onto her kasa and made her way towards the inn, where she found Rryn calmly giving instructions. Mallory was amazed by the strength and confidence in her friend, and a slight smile formed as she remembered other adventures that the two of them had been involved in.
Rryn turned to Mallory and after quick hugs she set Mallory to work making sure that they had enough blankets and bandages for those that were not able to be evacuated and for those that might become injured. Mallory nodded and began to make her way to the door when Rryn caught her arm and whispered. “Gailan has gone with Tai to help bring in the farmers, but I promised to keep you safe.” Then with a slight grin she continued “Don’t make me go back on a promise.” Mallory grinned in return and tied her kasa on tightly and said lightly, “Who me? Trouble?” With that she slowly made her way through the whipping winds and the blinding rain to the tailor’s shop. She spoke to the weaver and he said he would make sure that there were blankets sent over to the inn. With a nod she again stepped outside and was slightly surprised to find the wind had lessened a bit. Perhaps this was the end? She made her way to the healer’s hut, only to find it had been blown down in the night. She watched as people worked to clear the area, and she was directed to the dojo, where the healers had taken what they could salvage from the hut. She lowered her head and thanks and started out.
Mallory looked up at the sky and was surprised to see a bit of sun, but then when she looked over the horizon her heart fell quickly. Coming straight towards them were storm clouds she had never seen before. Mallory closed her eyes and tried to connect with Gailan to make sure he was safe and unharmed. Suddenly her mind was filled with Gailan’s calm voice “Do not worry my love. We will survive this storm as we have survived others. I will be with you soon…” A sense of warmth washed over her and she closed her eyes briefly before making her way quickly to the dojo. Mallory packed up some bandages and healing herbs. She could hear the winds outside again gaining strength. She slowly made her way back to the inn, struggling against the winds and the rain. She covered her eyes to shield them from the rain and debris and made her way back to the inn…{to be continued} _________________ Good friends are like stars.
