Alessandra sat in front of the fireplace in her new home and she reflected on the recent events. Only a week ago Asher, Mave and she had been mysteriously summoned from the Garden to a meeting in Minoc. She had not known what to expect, and when she arrived to see Liam and Beowulf there she knew something was in the works. Before she could question it much the person responsible for calling them all together stood before them… Vaen Swiftar. He quickly enlightened them and let them know that due to various circumstances he had decided it was indeed time for the return of the Legion of Justice. He asked each one of them to return to the Legion, and make it as great as it once was. Asher had already agreed to follow in his friends lead. Liam and Beowulf joined without any hesitation, and after a little silence and pondering Mave also agreed to return to the Legion. Alessandra looked around at those standing there and finally at Mave before she quietly replied, “I am no longer needed in Sanctus. I had hoped that this day would come when my friends would all return to this realm. My heart belongs with the Legion and those within it. I will also return.” With that Vaen handed her a robe, made with the signature green cloth of the Legion. That had been a week ago.

Alessandra had been unpacking her belongings from her recent move when a messenger arrived with a letter from Asher, asking that she meet him at Hanse’s hostel. She gave the messenger a small pouch of gold, and thanked him. She read over the letter and shook her head wondering what Asher would be wanting. She placed the letter in a basket by the door, closed her eyes and spoke the words that recalled her into Sanctus. As she opened her eyes she was greeted by Asher, Mave and a large man covered with animal tattoos all over his body who introduced himself as Shalish-Aseem. She smiled warmly at the stranger and introduced herself. The man was as tall as Mave, he was loud, but he had kind eyes and laughed a lot. Asher explained that Shalish-Aseem was a man with a special gift, and he wanted to take Alessandra and Mave into Ilshenar and have their totem guardians named. It sounded interesting to Alessandra, and reminded her much of her mother K-Li and her godfather Valimus. As they were talking Dan joined in the conversation, and agreed to also have his totem named.

The evening began in Ilshenar, not far from where Alessandra was now sitting. They sought out a grizzly bear, and they were each instructed to slay the bear with minimal armor and a basic weapon. She was not surprised when Mave questioned the honor in such an action. She also questioned the need to kill the bear, but after much contemplation decided that the bear would not die in vain or at the hand of a selfish hunter in search of a trophy. She carefully cut away the hides and the meat of the creature, and as she did she closed her eyes and in her own way thanked the creature for what it was about to do for her and her friends. The three of them completed the task, and it seemed only fitting that Mave, who questioned the honor, was sought out by a golden guardian bear.

They continued on through Ilshenar and came to a small clearing with a small pool of water. They were all instructed to cleanse themselves in the water. Alessandra could feel her cheeks grow warm with embarrassment at the thought of being unclothed in the presence of Mave and Dan. Shalish seemed oblivious, but thankfully Mave noticed and suggested that they take turns. She agreed and made her way out into the forest and turned her back to let the men bathe in private. After a little while she felt Mave gently laid his hand on her arm and told her to take her turn and he and Dan would stay to guard her. She blushed again and he chuckled and assured her they would not peek. She glanced around the woods and began to remove her clothing. She lowered herself slowly into the water and began to cleanse herself. She heard a twig crack and turned to see a young hind and its mother. Alessandra remained still as she watched the two of them in the moonlight. The mother twitched her ears back and forth and raised her nose to the wind. She watched as the two wandered out of sight and then let out a breath. She finished her bathing and slowly emerged from the water and quickly pulled her robe on over her head. She then made her way to where Mave was waiting and she quietly placed her hand in his and without a word they made their way to where the others were waiting for them.

The final part of the ritual took place after a short walk to a clearing, where Shalish created a warm fire and they all took their places around it and sat. Shalish offered them all a small bowl of wine that he had added some of the blood from the bear to. The wine was sweeter than any wine Alessandra had before tasted, and soon her mind was fuzzy and the flames from the fire danced and became images. Shalish began asking them questions, to lend guidance to the guardian totem that each possessed. When the time of the naming came, Shalish named Dan the Combatant, and Totem of the Lion as his guardian and Mave was named the Protector, his guardian spirit the Great Bear. Finally Shalish turned to Alessandra and spoke of her compassion and her caring heart towards her friends and loved ones. She was named the caretaker and her guardian spirit the elephant. Alessandra was a bit surprised, but after Shalish explained it, it made more sense.

The ritual ended with Shalish giving each of them the leather and meat from the bear that they had killed, and explained that each of them were to do with it as they saw fitting. Alessandra looked at her hides and meat and instantly knew what to do. She turned to Mave and leaned up to let him know where she was going. She softly kissed his cheek and with a slight smile she spoke the words that transported her to the city of Vesper. She knew a family on the outskirts of the town was in need of aid since the overrun of the Ophidians. She left the hides and the meat on the front step and quickly knocked on the door before casting the spell to hide herself from their eyes. She watched as the gift was taken into the house, and turned and made her way back home.
