...but play it he did. One look at Alessandra had caused Mave to follow her to the stage and embark on yet another of Poet's crazy ideas for his tavern. It wasn't as bad as he had thought it would be, but now that it was over with, all Mave wanted was to have a quiet drink with Aless then retire for the night... but that was before he had stepped through the gate to Hanse's and had almost bumped headlong into the back end of Talon Skyfire's horse...

As soon as Mave arrived in Sanctus, he knew the situation was already going downhill fast. Vaen and Beowulf were in a heated discussion with Talon, and not even a full minute after they had arrived, an insult to Alessandra's honor had already been hurled by the King of Sanctus. But as Mave's hand reached for his blade, he felt the small hand of Aless grasp his, he felt her ask him to restrain as she gently shook her head. Mave let out a deep breath and stared straight ahead, listening to the continuing conversation...

A second time, Talon, the man that Mave had thought he might be able to fight for, flung hurting remarks at Aless. Mave's jaw clenched tighter, but so did Alessandra's hand in his...as he let out another deep breath, he tried to focus more on the situation at hand and less on personal feelings. A quick glance around showed more mounted warriors arriving wearing Sanctus colors... now outnumbered about three to one, Mave wondered if they were not being goaded...

Finally, a third insult was throw... a glance to Aless showed a tear gliding down her cheek. Every muscle fiber in Mave's body tensed, preparing to fight the whole army himself if need be, but the compassionate look in her eyes... pleading him to not react... it was the only thing in the world that could have stayed his hand, and though it took every ounce of respect and love that he held for this woman, he held his hand... but Beowulf could not hold back any longer...

Shalish, popping out of nowhere, had fallen quickly... then Alessandra fell...as Mave momentarily halted Belegohtar, he saw her crumpled body and the rage suddenly burst forth...

Mave charged through the Sanctus soldiers, eventually finding Vaen and Beowulf, and as they had done before, their movements began to complement each other. This night, the odds did not matter. One Sanctus soldier fell, then another... Mave tried to find Talon, to meet him on the battlefield, but the king had long since fled. When the dust cleared, the three Legion brothers reigned in their mounts in front of the Hostel. They had survived, but such bloodshed could not be called a victory. As the wounded were being gathered and helped, Mave looked up to see Talon come striding back up. With a slow shake of his head, Mave helped Alessandra up and through a portal...

After taking Alessandra home, Mave walked through the door of his keep, laying his cloak and weapons aside and sat down infront of the fire as a young girl brought him a glass of water. With a small smile and a half-hearted scolding about how she should already be in bed, Mave sent her back upstairs and gazed into the flames.

'I didn't even want to go play the game...' he thought to himself as he sat into the early hours of the morning, wondering how this all would end.
