Doireann placed the gold before the ankh, her voice whispering praise to the virtues. She watched the gold disappear as she spoke, leaving the area before her bare. Slowly she stood, turning to mount her swampy. She clicked her heals, and began to race southward through the forest, glancing to her right to see dragons had come when called by a champion. She grinned seeing the warriors battle the fierce beast, but continued onward to where the lich were known to gather. WORD, she thought in scorn. Not quite the lich she wished to dispose of, but it would do to stop her anger. She unsheathed her sword and slowly began to attack and destroy them, one by one. As she swung to defeat the last lich within the area, a voice whispered near her.
Why did you let them kill me?
Her swing faltered, missing the lich. Her arm automatically turned gracefully without conscious though, removing the head of the lich as she looked around in fear.
“Who said that?” she asked out loud, looking for the owner of the voice. Seeing no one, she sheathed her sword, and raced back to the ankh. Her heart beat painfully in her chest as she approached the moongate.
Why didn’t you save me?
She jumped in shock, falling off her mount, her eyes looking frantically around. Seeing nothing she ran to the ankh, and closed her eyes. Feeling the unreasonable fear abate, she opened her eyes and bravely stared at the ghostly figure of a Jhelom warrior before her.
You could have saved me, why didn’t you?
She continued to stare at the apparition, a silent tear rolling down her cheek.
“I was scared,” she said in a hushed tone, conveying an emotion beyond mere sorrow.
Then free me, the warrior pleaded, his eyes full of pain as she stared back. Doireann nodded, her mind trying to figure how to defy the power that he was sacrificed for.
“Will you ever forgive me?” she asked the warrior, her voice choked with emotion.
Free me, and you will forgive yourself, the warrior said as he faded from her sight. Doireann stayed where she was, crying silently as she stared unblinking at where the man had been, her only support the ankh of valor behind her. |
