Mave stood on top of his tower gazing down upon the roof of Alessandra's home where she walked tending her garden. Smiling slightly, he turned to go down the stairs and noticed a pidgeon dropping a bundle on top of the table. Picking it up, Mave read it, then glanced around to his sleeping dragon companion.

"Belegohtar, wake up, we must fly quickly", Mave said as he leapt astride the dragon before it had even raised itself from its slumber.

Sensing his master's ungency, Belegohtar lunged into the air and was pumping his wings, gaining altitude before Mave had even spoken a destination to him.

"Vesper, that is where they must be departing from", Mave said. "It would make since if Brianha is going with him, especially since she would have the most things to pack" he added with a forced smile.

As quickly as an arrow, Mave's longtime companion bore him to Vesper. After circling the docks for a moment, Mave realized that they must have already departed and guided Belegohtar out to sea.

"Keep a sharp eye out",he told the dragon. "Head towards the first vessel you see. They can't have been at sea for too long."

They flew for a number hours before Belegohtar let out a roar and veered sharply. A few moments later, Mave could pick out a ship, still a small dark shape on the vast blue of the sea. Mave guided Belegohtar close enough to the ship to where his elven eyesight could distinguish the people on the deck. He smiled slightly as he saw Vaen with his arm around Brianha, leaning on the rail, gazing out to see. He saw Asher, talking with the helmsman.

Probably arguing about the best course, Mave thought with a grin. But where was this fourth Vaen had written of. He did not recognize any of the others on the deck. It was then that the brisk wind blew Brianha's dress tight against her body, and Mave nodded slightly. Now he understood. As Belegohtar begin to decend towards the ship, Mave gave him a slight tug up.

"No my friend", he said. "Vaen wished to take his leave from a distance and we will Honor that wish. We will simply keep an eye out for him, see that he safely gets as far as we can go."

********************

They flew for days. Mave had exhausted the small supply of dried meat and waterskin that he kept with him. They had journeyed together enough times for Mave to know when Belegohtar was tiring and as they neared a week out to sea, he knew that they had reached the point of turning back. If they did not, Belegohtar might not be strong enough to make it all the way back.

Peering back down at the ship, Mave was glad to see that they were all back on the deck, giving him one last view to store in his memory.

"I understand now why you must leave my true friend", Mave said with a sad smile. "Take care of those that travel with you. I am truly glad that you have found your peace. It was an Honor to fight at your side, to share in your victories as well as your pains, and to call you friend. Perhaps one day, we will find each other again and share in a final peace as well."

Drawing his sword, Mave guided Belegohtar down a bit to avoid a cloud obstructing his view. He pointed the sword towards his departing friend then raised it in a salute as Belegohtar reared back, spreading his wings wide in his own salute.

"Walk in Honor my old friend"

With that last farewell, he turned his dragon companion back the direction they had come and chuckled slightly as he realized his eyes had grown a bit blurry.

********************

Upon returning to the Vesper docks, Mave spoke with the harbor master, and after paying what could probably buy the harbormaster a new ship of his own, he let Mave view the departures for the previous week.

With a nod to himself, Mave found the entry for his friends' passage. After looking it over and making sure he would never forget the destination that was scribed, he tore the page from the ledger and placed it into the harbormaster's fireplace, watching it until there was nothing left.

Striding back outside he climbed upon Belegohtar and they headed back to the skies.

"I will never tell of your destination to anyone my friend, this I swear on my Honor. But I have not given up hope of us sitting by a fire together once more", Mave whispered with a slight sad smile as he guided the dragon towards Cove.

Alessandra looked up from her garden as Mave and Belegohtar took to the sky. "Where are those two headed off to I wonder?" she murmured softly to herself. She watched as they could no longer be seen, and returned to her garden, humming softly to herself an ancient elven song her mother used to sing to her as a child. She looked up as a pigeon dropped a small bundle near the fountain. She unwrapped the bundle carefully, and upon doing so was delighted to find a new music gear for her musicbox. She opened the letter and as she began reading it, her eyes began to fill with tears. Again she looked to the sky, now knowing where Mave and his beloved dragon had gone. She knew he would not ask them to change their minds, as they had not asked them to do, but hopefully he would return with news of their safety.

She would greatly miss them all. Vaen was like a brother to her, taking her in when she was so very lost in the world. He had taught her many things, he had been a patient teacher and Aless regretted not being able to thank him. Brianna, the sister she had never had. The two of them had spent many days talking, both in laughter and in tears. Aless was indeed thankful to have a friend such as her, and she would miss her greatly. She had not known Asher as long as the other two, and she recalled how a few times they had not seen the same way, yet they were still very much alike and she considered him a friend. Aless did not know who the fourth person was, perhaps Mave would also be able to answer that when he returned. Sighing softly she wiped the tears from her eyes, and looked again to the sky whispering...

News travels fast.

Earlier in the day, travelers from the mainland had brought news of Lord Swiftar's depature from Sosaria.

Bittersweet.

Talon sat in his favorite place, his balcony high atop the King's Tower in Castle Blackgard. It was the one place where he found peace and quiet amongst the usual hustle and bustle of Sanctus. His thoughts drifted to the past, remembering Vaen and the Legion.

There were few men who could break through Talon's cool and calculating demeanor. Vaen was the best. No one else could provoke him to such rage and frustration as Swiftar. Now that the day he had looked forward to for so many years had come, he only felt regret and inanity.

Where was the euphoria he had envisioned? Where was the sense of triumph and victory?

Bittersweet.

The Legion had been many things, and its history closely tied with that of Sanctus. The two orders had been staunch and supportive friends, and the worst of enemies.

Hindsight is perfect, as the saying goes. Now that the Legion was no more, Talon realized that they were not the tyrannical and ruthless brigands he saw them as in the past, forcing their skewed idealogies on others.

They were a noble group, seeking to bring justice to those who had lost it. They had taught Sanctus, and himself personally, many lessons during their interactions. Noble allies, and noble enemies, even if they did not seem so at the time.

Bittersweet.

After collecting his thoughts, the King left special instructions to the color guard.

As the sun set over the forest of Sanctus, its last rays illuminated a striking image atop Castle Blackguard.

There, side by side at half mast, flew the golden dragon standard of Sanctus and the standard of the Legion of Justice. A final salute to a great legacy.

Bittersweet.
