Tie stretched out next to the fire. This was a fine place to camp. The surrounding rocks provided good protection from the wind and the sand. The desert was difficult to travel in, but alas she had to follow where her enemy led. She wondered if they knew she was following them. Did they know why, and did they know what she intended to do once she caught up with them?

Tie rolled over on her side and watched the flames in the campfire dance with one another. She missed her old friend, Lee, and she even missed Lee’s silly fiancé, Daz. She had dreamed of the couple the night before but recalled very little of it. She closed her eyes trying to remember the dream. She only knew that the dream was menacing. She had sensed deception, and the dream was not frivolous. Lee and Daz were threatened by something or someone. She sat up and looked into the fire, shaking her head briskly. There was nothing she could do. She could not turn back now. Besides, Lee and Daz were very intelligent elves and Lee was a magnificent mage. And Daz...she laughed. No one will hurt Daz so long as his pet, Remi, was by his side.

She turned her thoughts to the pack of beasts she was chasing. Tie was gaining ground on her enemy everyday, but tracking them had been difficult. So, she had hired the help of a drifter that knew the ways of tracking. This woman went by the name of Tigress. Tie thought maybe “woman” was not the word she should use to describe Tigress. Tie looked over the fire at the sleeping stranger. She was some kind of cat. Some kind of cat/elf hybrid. Tie shook her head as the feline began to slowly twist and turn a long white tail. Feline! That’s the word! Tie nodded decisively to herself. Tie narrowed her eyes at the young feline, but then she smiled slightly. Tigress was very likable.

Tie laid back down placing her hands behind her head, gazing at the stars. It was a clear night, and it was chilly. She shivered as she pulled a blanket over her body. She tightened the turban she had wrapped around her hairless head. It was difficult to wrap as her ears kept getting in the way. She thought of her friend, Sparrowhawk. “I wonder what he is doing right now,” she asked herself.

She barely heard the howl, but she sat up quickly and clutched her weapon. She scurried up one of the huge rocks they had camped next to. She looked out over the landscape with her keen, elven vision. Many, many miles ahead she saw the pack of her enemy feeding on something, or was it someone. Tie tightened her grip on the war mace Sparrowhawk had given her. “Enjoy it,” she thought to herself, and through clenched teeth she whispered angrily, “Enjoy it while you can. I will avenge my family, and you will bleed. I swear, you will bleed.” Her face tightened as her eyes began to fill with tears. She fought to hold them back, but they were overwhelming. One tear escaped and she quickly wiped it away with the sleeve of her robe. “Tie! Why are you talking to yourself? We are trying to sleep down here,” Tigress called grumpily from below. Tie looked down and saw Tigress rolling over, turning her back to the rock, mumbling.

Tigress traveled with a unicorn called Fionnlagh. Well, this is the name she had introduced the unicorn as, but Tigress called him Charlie. Tie had thought it was strange for such a majestic creature to answer to this name. Nevertheless, he did, and he did not seem to mind. The unicorn whispered in Tie's mind, “I know you are in pain, but you must rest. Come, rest your body and your heart." This was not the first time the unicorn had spoken to her using this medium. Tie was quickly growing to love the beast. He was the kindest soul she had ever met. She guessed she could trust Tigress if such a noble animal chose to travel with her. Tie nodded, placing her hands to her eyes, vigorously forcing back the tears. She sighed heavily and climbed back down the rock. She laid down, and with the help of a lullaby that Charlie hummed gently in the night, she went to sleep.
