Lee awoke with a throbbing pain behind her right ear. She raised from the unfamiliar bed and observed her surroundings. Multi-colored vials and bottles lined one side of the room. Oddly, she felt safe in this strange place. She closed her eyes and tried to remember….
Suddenly she heard Daz scream, “LEE! You are awake! Oh, I have been so worried! Let’s get you home.”
Daz helped Lee onto his trusty pup, Remi. As they escorted her home, Daz refreshed Lee’s memory of the night before. She had gotten seasick on the boat while they had been chasing pirates. After the chase was over she had stepped onto the docks; dizzy and nauseous. Then, she passed out. When she passed out she hit her head on a nearby log. The blow had caused her to suffer multiple seizures.
Luckily, a newcomer to the island, Raedyn, had offered his healing skills. He took Lee to his clinic where he determined that there was no proven cure for her ailments. He did, however, have an experimental remedy that might work. Daz gave his consent and Raedyn administered the medicine. He then gave Lee a touch of something to help her sleep. He informed Daz that the side effects were unknown and hopefully temporary.
“Unknown,” Lee asked.
“Yes, but you would have died, other wise,” Daz responded.
“Well, I don’t feel anything out of the ordinary right now,” she stated matter-of-factly. "We must have Raedyn over for dinner and thank him for his kind help.”
Daz agreed. They reached Lee’s house where he helped her to bed. She sat on her bed, and stared up to Daz. Suddenly, her head jerked slightly to the left. Daz tilted his head. Lee seemed not to notice the tic. Lee did it again, still not noticing.
“Hmmm, I think I’ll hang out here with you this afternoon….” Daz stated calmly.
“Don’t be silly, I am fine. You have the zoo function to wo… Hey! Did you see that bunny?” Lee pointed outside the window. Daz glanced quickly to the window and then back to Lee.
“Umm, yea… cute little fella… Why don’t you lie down honey…”
“Hmm, alright – if you think it is necessary. I love you. I’m just crazy about you. I think we were made for each…Oh my God – It’s two o’clock! I have to prepare for class. Have you written your essay yet Daz?”
Daz stood flabbergasted at the way Lee was speaking. She was usually so calm and well spoken – always keeping her attention on the task or issue at hand. But now – geesh, she was acting like a six year old human child – she had no attention span! Daz responded slowly, “I haven’t written it yet…”
“Written what? What are you rambling about? I have work to do. I’ll see you tonight!” Lee hopped off the bed and gave Daz a love pat on his behind as her head ticked to the left again.
“Ok, Lee. You do your thing I’m going downstairs to fix something to eat. Do you want something?”
“Oh, no, no. I am fine. But thanks anyway. You know what would be nice? Some food! Would you fix us something to eat?” Lee’s head ticked again.
“Umm, sure.” Daz went downstairs and sat at the table. Raedyn had said temporary side effects – hadn’t he? “Temporary, temporary, temporary…” he repeated to himself softly over and over. |

Though he went about his chores, Raedyn's mind was with that limp and lifeless form he had seen laying upon the cot in his clinic. His heart burned with anticipation. She hadn't yet rose from her deep, refined nightshade induced slumber, at least not when he was tip toeing by in the minutes before the sun rose to it's full glory.
As he went about his business, he racked his brain for anything he knew about the experimental medicine he had used on her. It was a last resort, most said, and was very dangerous. It was never consumed, always applied to skin or superficial wounds. But he had made her consume it. It was all he knew of, short of magic, to heal the internal damage he feared she had suffered.
As the sun reached the end of it's journey across the sky, and Raedyn reached his clinic, he noticed that she no longer lay upon the cot. He knew Daz had been keeping an eye on her, and that she had most likely gone with him. He would have to visit her... to keep an eye on any side effects.
Raedyn's heart was still heavy with the responsibility of any adverse effects she may have suffered as he walked over toward the medicine cabinet. He opened it slowly, the door creaking on it's hinges. As the light seeped in to the dark and sterile cabinet, he saw the vial of blood, a few drops gone from it. Raedyn hoped with all of his heart he would never have to use the Daemon's Blood again. |
