Months had passed since proof of her twin's survival was given to Xana. For her life she could not figure out why the woman wanted to do her harm. Should they not pursue a relationship now that they were found to one another? One day while out riding, Xana went into Minoc in search of answers. A man she encountered told her everybody was off on a caravan; the man did not seem familiar to Xana but that really meant nothing with the way gypsy people were always going about in those caravans, as well as sharing their camps the world over. It had been her hope to find out why she was not told the truth about her twin, why she was told that the other died shortly after their birth. Apparently her other half was told no such thing. She rode away with no answers.
Life had settled into a much smoother and happier place for Xana since the day her paladin--her heart!--invited her to live in his home. It bothered him for her to travel about, alone more than not. Being smitten with the man, and convinced he must be the one she'd been waiting for her whole life, it took little encouragement for her to become comfortable with the arrangement.
However one day she cast a moongate to the humble home, and stepped through. Immediately her eye went to the note that was pinned to one of the support pillars with a dagger. With a shaking hand she removed the blade and cast it aside. When she saw writing nearly identical to her own, the tremor in her hand intensified. The note was brief but to the point. It read:
Sister,
I should have known that you would fall into the arms of a paladin. So typical, with your holier-than-thou attitude, isn't it? Though I have decided to spare your life, at least for now, I will tell you this once. Stay out of Umbra. I do not think that is too much to ask, do you? Should you disagree, we can take this up at a mutually convenient time. But stay away. If you know what is good for you, STAY AWAY. Remember, Xana. I watch. And wait. ~M
Xana walked inside and sat at the table, waiting, thinking, frightened. She wondered...what right had her sister to make such demands? In the quietude of the seaside home, she also wondered just how much her sister knew of her. The implication of being watched was unsettling.
"So should I give in to this demand?" she asked the empty house. Umbra was such a pleasant town. None of the nonsense she often encountered in other cities and villages ever seemed to touch her there. But on the other hand, her mind suggested, if this could bring happiness to the lost twin as well as keep her safe...was it really such a bad trade?
Finally she heard the sound of the paladin's footsteps approach. A faint but sad smile touched the corners of her mouth. As the man stepped into his home, she spoke. "We need to talk." _________________ An artist is a creature driven by demons ~Faulkner
