He was a whisper in the forest. Even in the unusual silence, the Warden was quite at home, his soft booted feet touching the proper spots on the forest floor that yielded the least amount of sound. His keen ears could detect the heavy breathing of his mark. He had tracked the beast for a few hours.

The bear had gone mad. That much was obvious. It had killed a few children on the eastern side of town. And had shown the signs of a sickness that Eldan had seen before. He maneuvered carefully, ever so slowly through the underbrush, his clothing camouflaged quite well. He was quite certain he would remain hidden from view.

The Warden's keen blue eyes spotted the beast not 40 yards away. With practiced ease he quickly pulled an arrow from his quiver and knocked it in place. He took a few moments to line up the shot, hoping to take the bear down as quickly as possible. Hopefully it would be enough to stop the beast before it did any more harm.

The arrow cut through the darkness of night when Eldan released the bow string. It sailed expertly into the side of the bear's head. It fell in a heap, dead before it hit the ground.

He walked out from his position in the brush of the clearing. Looking sadly down at the magnificent beast and shook his head. He took a moment a quiet prayer of thanks for the beast's sacrifice and scattered some dirt over the corpse. He doubted the meat would be edible. Sores were apparent on the bear's hide, no doubt from the sickness that ailed it.

Eldan took nearly another hour to clear the area of brush and set the bear ablaze. His job done, the bear done with, he began the last leg of patrol. Hopefully, that would be the most excitement he would see.
