The night air was cool on the ranger's skin. He had been running non-stop for most of the evening and sweat soaked his body. Eldan's normally handsome elven features were marred by streaks of dirt and some scratches from branches whipping by his face. His body was exhausted from the Militia's initial scouting of Vesper's outer forests. The evening had been eventful, and benefitted the cause in the form of information. He only slowed his pace when he saw the single candle lit in the safe house the Militia had erected just outside of Minoc. Battle may soon come to this place as well.
His mind recounted the events of the evening.
They had arrived at the ruins shortly before nightfall. During the hour where the light is the most deceiving. Eldan arrived first and cleared the area, and sent the signal that all was clear. Riven and the girl known simply as Cherry arrived in mere minutes, melting from the shadows.
After a quick and quiet plan of approach, they fanned out, in hopes of seeing what patrols were in the area. And what sort of force they were dealing with. Those of the Order were vigilant, and it was not long before the Warden himself was spotted by one of the mounted knights. He had ran, to the tree as always when he faced such odds. The dark clothed riders followed him, not only one, but three it seemed. "HALT!" They continued to call to him. It wasn't until one in a hooded robe stepped in his path abreast, that Eldan stopped.
They questioned him, as he knew they would. He feigned ignorance, in his heart, truly fearing he was to be hanged the next morning. They sough tax for non natives in Vesper. Eldan was only too happy to pay them. It was necessary at this point. They still had not connected him to the resistance in the area as of yet it seemed. His allies had been spotted as well, so in turn he paid the necessary tax. As well as one for hunting in their lands.
"Now, your name," The man said before him, his face hidden in darkness by the cowl of his robe. The Warden merely smiled and bowed respectfully to the man, "Sir Bob Bobless my lord." Apparently, the one known as Ditto of this Order had delivered his message the previous night.
"That is the second time in two days your name has come up in this area." After a few more questions and alot of suspicious looks, Eldan was able to extract himself, not before two others had arrived, wearing similar garb.
He blinked and came back to the present. It seemed he was spared this evening. Though his carelessness would not be repeated. He quickly moved into the guard tower of the Militia and pulled some parchment from a drawer and began penning a message he felt was long over due... |
