Sitting on her bed her mind echoed the words of her friend.
“Lets have an adventure! Come sailing with me.”
Kaedence wouldn’t have considered such an invite a few weeks prior. Her brother had been in a coma. She had seldom left his bedside. She had constantly been dumping elixirs and potions onto him letting his skin absorb the liquid. All she was able to do was cure him of the abrasions he had and wait. All she had wanted was for him to be back. Weeks on end she continued in this fashion. She didn’t sleep, she blacked out periodically then cursed herself for those moments of weakness. Bags had formed under eyes. Even her eye and hair color began to lose its iridescent luster. She didn’t remember eating at all. The proof was in her clothing it hung much looser around her body. The only time she willingly left Izac’s bedside was when she cried. She told herself that he needn’t worry over her when his life hung in the balance.
The only other time she left the barracks were on her parent’s orders. Her mother cared not to see her face as she attempted to revive her son. Her father saw the need for her to get fresh air. The world seemed as if it were closing in on her. Invisible walls seemed to close in and suffocate her.
Varrius would accompany her, even though conversation was sparse She still appreciated his presence. He always lifted her spirits on these outings.
Then her brother woke from his coma and the world was as it had been before.
Only Kaedence didn’t seem to fit in it anymore. The inside walls that kept the invisible outside walls at bay now pressed in on her. She loathed staying indoors for more than what was required of her. Her restlessness had become physically unbearable. Often woke she at night gasping for air. Many mornings she awoke on her balcony or atop the courtyard at Willow's barracks. Now outside was the only place that she could breathe properly.
When Kelei came back from her rite of passage, Kaedence’s excitement couldn’t be contained.
Kelei’s adventures and tales fascinated her. When Kelei extended the invitation to Kaedence to set sail with her as they planned since early childhood, she quickly accepted. She couldn’t wait to collect rare and exotic ingredients. Her studies with Cear and Dragothien had been going quite well but she seemed to hit a wall. She hoped with this experience would send it crashing down.
They planned to leave at sundown. Her parents had given her gold, all her alchemy tools were packed along with her all her clothes. It all lay neatly stacked waiting to be taken onto the ship. Her friends and parents would be there to send her, Ciara and Kelei off. though something was still nagging her. She still hadn’t seen Varrius for a while. She sent wisps to him telling him of her departure but no word back. Not even today. She sent a wisp hours ago....still nothing. Accepting the fact that she wouldn’t see him she swallowed back her tears of disappointment and began to drag her luggage down towards the front door. She walked though the hallway thinking
It’s going to be months before I walk down this hallway again
As she dragged the last of her bags out she heard a knock at the door. Her heart fluttered
He’s here finally
"Just a moment" She called out excitedly as she ran for the door and thrust it opened.
“Hey Kaedi! You ready? Ciara is probably already on the ship!” Kelei stated.
“Oh,” Kaedence said hoping her friend wouldn’t notice the slight drop in tone wrong. Kelei walked through the doorway and Kaedence quickly turned blinking a tear from her eye but cleared her throat and said, “These is all I am taking with me, I think my father has to take that one,” She pointed to the largest piece of luggage. “It’s really heavy”
Kelei looked at all the luggage mortified, “you can’t take any dead bodies Kaedence.” She laughed and said “these are all my clothes” Kelei made a face
“ The ship’s gonna capsize. Personally I'd rather have the dead people."Kelei mumbled as she heaved the luggage.
Kaedence rolled her eyes and chuckled. Then she sighed as she saw no one other than Kelei outside. She must have sighed a little more audibly than she intended because Kelei turned on her heel and said, "Don't worry he'll come, I know it." Kaedence didn't bother pretending that she didn't know who or what she was talking about. There was no use lying to true friends. She slowly walked towards the door.
With a jolt she remembered something and came to a halt just before the threshold. "Kelei, I'll be right back, I need to get something"
"If it's another piece of clothing, I will commandeer your head!" Laughing Kaedence turned and ran back to her room. She thrust open the hope chest her aunt had given her. It was mostly emptied it only held scraps of paper and duplicate notes from her studies. She moved around the papers and found what she was looking for. It was his favorite book.
A Political Call To Anarchy written by Lord Blackthorn. He had been prodding her to read it for ages. Perhaps she finally will on this trip.
She chuckled as she stuffed the book into her jacket. She called for her father as she closed her room door.
"Daddy, we're leaving, can you get the big bag I have?"
She walked through the hallway once more and walked out of her house.
This is how my adventure begins.
She thought to herself as she walked to the carriage that would take her to the docks. |

Kelei stood tall and proud at the helm of the ship, she had hired her crew and now only two spots remained to be filled. She smiled when she saw the soft colorful hair of Kaedi and scowled at the men who were equally smiling in her direction. They quickly got back to work. She always kept her bow ready to pierce the heart of a man who got ideas in his head...
Keldrils hair still hung from it, her good luck charm and in a way a sort of fatherly protection placed on his daughter. An aura exuded from Kelei, she had no time for silly men....
She welcomed Kaedi whose heart seemed down, perhaps her going away had not been what she wanted. Kelei would see she was kept busy, learning the hard life of the sea and soon she would care nothing about such things. *Kelei told herself the same thing every day*.
She planned to stop in buc's den and send word to Morgan, and perhaps they could meet up and do some treasure hunting. She also intended to search out some other mysterious pirates she had read of. Perhaps she could find even Illiam Drinn who seemed to be laying low. Possibly because of a law entanglement. She chuckled. Turning on her heal she smiled, she needed to get Ciara aboard but she barked orders steering the vessel away from fire island heading towards a close port for Ciara to meet them. She doubted very much that the person Kaedi was waiting for would show up, but it was best, she hadnt the heart anymore to tell Tyranis goodbye herself. She had work to do and he knew it. _________________ May destiny guide you... |
