Does anybody have any suggestions for the repeated crashes that comes with running UO with a Vista OS? We have a new computer (and it's most wonderful!) which unfortunately came with Vista. EA of course says there's no planned or known fixes for the issues...but I know the com is very resourceful. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

PS--Sorry if this is in the wrong area, I usually don't post much outside of RP areas.

To help, I would need more information. First Make sure you have all windows updates applied. Then next time you get the crash... does it offer you a report dialog? If so, ask it for more details then post here.

I am going to encourage the owner of the PC to create a profile and post here...this is going to get too confusing for me. Thank you!

Vista has a lot of issues woth bugs etc... with an email address you can create a passport account and email them for help. It can be slow but it's free, The suggestion to got o microsoft.com and check for updates may help. I would also recommend checking your drivers.

Hmm...
We might need more info indeed.
Which Vista version (Basic? Ultimate? Premium?)
What UO client (KR? Legacy?)
With UOA or without UOA if it's Legacy.
Updated graphic driver?
Administration Account? UO set to run as admin (which is the most important thing).

I have Vista Home Premium on my new Laptop and UO, both KR and Legacy run as fine as on XP. Which means Legacy runs fine, and KR crashes where it would crash on XP but not outside of that.

There's your problem right there.

Try not having Vista. It kills me daily for no reason.

I appreciate all input given here and have relayed it to where it needs to be. However, it is definitely best for Magus to come here and talk with you guys. Having no experience with Vista (which I dread) and no desire to have as much, he'll be coming here to share all this fun stuff. I know he's spent hours doing various checks and tweaks, we're just at a loss. Hit the wall, insert cliche here. Thanks everybody!

Hello all. I'm new to these boards, but I'm an old school Ultima player. I started with Mondain in the 80s. I also happen to be the one with the Vista issue. I will try to answer the questions posed.

I have Vista Premium 64 bit. In a powerhouse over clocked graphics machine. Multicore, Twin Radeon 8800s. It's awesome. Unless I want to drop back and play UO legacy. All my drivers and updates are current.

Everyting I have read on the EA sites, I have done. Reset compatibilities and stuff. Yet, I still have a total OS shut down when I start UO. No dialog box, just BANG puter shuts off. When I reboot, I get a message saying Vista found an error and shut down to protect my system.

KR seems to run just fine. I just hate the KR interface. I guess I can just deal and play KR, But it seems silly that a puter that can run DDO in max graphics mode, can't run a program as simple as UO 2d. I don't even run and sister programs for UO. Assist or UOAM.

I have to set UO and UOAssist to "run as administrator" otherwise it just crashs. I have Vista Home Premium.

I forgot one... another thing to try is right click your UO icon, go to properties. Then to the Compatibility Tab. Then hit "Run this program in compatability mode for: (then select the windows XP)

Hey I have never heard of this...just how does one do that? (Not that I intend to need to any time soon, just curious). =)

Yep, I did all that. Nothing worked. That's what motivated my post. Desperation.

Does anybody else who runs KR have the problem of the riding beetles running sideways and disappearing and reappearing?
