Beowulf rode quickly from Minoc to Vesper. He had been patrolling more than lately, due to the over whelming amount of fighting that had been occurring. Thanks to Tarothin, Adrien was over the top with his attack against the Armunn Empire. Just earlier today he had helped Vaen move the shipment of goods from Minoc to Cove. Beo could only wonder when Vesper would be offered direct help.
Beos' steed slowed to a comfortable trot as they neared the Northern bridge. Beowulf pulled the hood back from his head, he took one deep breath. The sea air filled his lungs, there was no better feeling than the mornings in Vesper. The steed carried him along the bridge, the two peered out into the distance, not even a fishers boat. Even though there was war, Vesper had some of the best fishing grounds, no citizen should be afraid to sail into the middle of the ocean. From the bank a little ways up, Beo heard what sounded to be an argument.
The guard walked forward into the poorly dressed man. His plate iron gloves colliding on the fishers chest, pushing him backwards.
"You've been late on your taxes." the guard barked
"S..sir, production has been slow lately. There isn't much safety in those waters lately! Besides, the Dark Order members collect the taxes, not the hired guards." The fisher replied
A metal gauntlet collided with the side of the fishers face. "Where are the Dark Order right now? They're busy preparing for war, the war that has found its way here! We collect our own taxes" The guard stepped forward, glaring towards the fallen fisher. He pulled his arm back, "I'm going to set an example"
"AN EX POR" The guard froze still, unable to move.
Beowulfs steed picked up speed as he rushed towards the two. In one quick motion he dismounted and ran towards the guard. Shooting his arm forward he grasped the guards neck and rushed him forward, slamming him against the bank wall. The spell wore off and the guard reached for his sword. In another quick motion Beo unsheathed his dagger and drove it though the guards hand, piercing through his palm and driving the rest of the blade into his thigh.
A shrieking scream left the guards lips. Beowulf tightened his grip and leaned in towards the guard.
"You can't do this!" the guard spoke through the choke.
"You're the reason the citizens are frightened. They're made to pay taxes that some cannot afford. Then the low class guards that are worthy of battle try to tax them for more? War may have found its way to this City, but I can assure you it'll be quickly removed."
Beowulf thrusted the guard to the left, kicking out his knee and taking him to the flat of his back. His arm followed, driving his head into the pavement. With his free hand he unhooked a pouch, full of gold coins.
"If you have any complaints, or feel something is unfair, be sure to see me." Beowulf spoke calmly, glaring downwards to the guard.
A cough escaped the fishers throat causing Beowulf to spin around. He thrusted the pouch through the air, the fisher caught it. His eyes widened, unsure of what to say he began to studder.
"S..sir, th..thank you!"
"Don't mention it, that should cover your taxes to us for a little while. Make sure to let anyone else who has fallen behind on work, to come see me. I'll be around much more now."
"Of course, yes sir, thank you."
"And fisher. If anyone not wearing the Dark Order badge ever asks for taxes or threatens you or anyone else around here, make to report it to me."
The fisher nodded and hurried off. Beowulf shrugged slightly, he had spent so much time preparing for battles and conquest, that he had forgotten about those who truly needed a guardian. Vaen had taken care of Minoc so well since it was given to him. Beowulf was determined to aid Vesper, regardless of any war. |
