The Black Prince berthed itself near a steep embankment off the southern coast of Thraxstadt, having completed its successful and return voyage from Minoc. Its captain had, by this time, spent most of his earnings in various activities directly related to his insatiable penchants for tavern-crawling and trashy women. He didn't care though. After all, in his line of work, gold was as easy to come by as it was to throw around frivilously.
Sighting the large dragon ship pull in and weigh anchor, Baron Thrax rode to the site and awaited its captain to debark, or rather, stagger ashore. "Welcome back, captain," he saluted.
"Hail Gov'nor! Nice o' ye to give me a reception, though I'd have preferred some o' yer lady friends to 'uv tagged along," he replied.
Thrax smiled, thinking to himself, "With your habits sir, forget reception. I'm here to keep a close eye on you!" Then he spoke out loud, "What news do you bring from Minoc?"
Captain Rotten grinned. "First things first, Gov'nor. How's about a swig o' that Yew wine ye been keepin' from me? Sure would loosen up me parched tongue for sure."
With a sigh, the Baron escorted him to the Bed & Breakfast where he opened a newer bottle of wine for him, filling his pewter mug to the brim serving it to him with his own hand. "There, how's that?" he said, setting the bottle down and seating himself at the table across from the pirate.
"Now *that's* nice! Thankee!" the captain barely finished saying before quaffing the entire contents of the mug without coming up for air, nor spilling a drop. He let the mug plop down.
"News?" the Baron reminded him.
"Ah yes, well, I met yer man there... Von."
"It's Vaen."
"Ya, him too. Got 'im the goods. Spent several days out and about. Women look most fine there. I..."
"Please, spare me that part. I'm sure they are lovely. What news?"
"Seems to 'ave been some sorta revolation or something... people dancin' and talkin' about interdependency from an omprore."
"A what? Revolution?! Independence? Did you mean Empire?"
Captain Rotten pointed at him. "Ya, tha's what I said. They be free. Reason why I stayed over longer'n necessary... till I ran low on money... got in some minor scrapes with the law... and then there was..."
He continued blathering on but the Baron got up abruptly from the table and took off, the captain hardly noticing. |
