His god had not just failed... he had failed utterly. Word of the exorcism reached Lomar, priest of Oggaroth, and he had confirmed the truth of it, for the god had not spoken to him for many days. Besides that, it was clear that Spawn was himself again.
He had decisions to make.
Should he continue to devote himself to a god who no longer existed on this plane, and might never appear again, or should he free himself of the shackles, the drudgery, of a religion that had been thrust upon him, which was now devoid of power or purpose?
Yet the memory of Oggaroth's fury and vindictiveness was forever emblazoned upon his mind. To defy the chaotic god was dangerous; to actually turn against him was an invitation to suicide and torment.
But Thraxanduril and Dharzhal before him were still alive and free; they had defied him and yet survived and prospered.
Where to go, and what to do now? Continued sacrifices would mean nothing---rituals without purpose. The virtues were a sham; he could never embrace them. But what other religion, or god, was worthy of total commitment and service? What person remained who understood the way of darkness that he could help plumb its depths?
The answer was clear: Umbra, where he would find answers, leadership, and purpose once more. |
