King Finian mounted Bucephalus and surveyed the small group of Stormguards already mounted and waiting for him in the field behind the citadel. With a nod, he put his helmet on his head, donned his shield, and spurred his war horse.
Young Owen unfurled the banner and rode after him. The mage DeMarcus, the warrior/harper Oliver, and the others rode close behind. They numbered about ten, if you count the red haired woman who rode to taunt them... Sonya.
Samson de Norville had told them a group of citizens from Trinsic wanted to meet with them to discuss an alliance. He smiled and introduced Vadikar, the Motley Crew guild leader, to the king. Vadikar was very charming and promised grand things, but his people wanted to see the entire Stormguard legion in a parade.
They rode through the moongate to Fel and headed south to Trinsic, every nerve alert. They suspected treachery, but any adventure after long weeks of boredom seemed irresistable. Sonya flirted with Owen, making his cheeks burn redly.
As they crossed the bridge over the river amid gazer country, mounted warriors moved onto the road before them. Finian signalled a halt and the column stopped. More mounted warriors moved across the road behind them and archers behind them.
The Motley Crew launched its attack from in front and behind. Arrows rained down on the Stormguards. They fought to put the river behind them so their enemy must attack from only one front and they succeeded, yet the enemy hemmed them there.
Owen fell, the banner toppling into the grass. Sonya yelled, "Finian, blow your horn! Call your allies to the slaughter!" and laughed.
DeMarcus fired enegy bolts aplenty and healing too, but he exhausted himself and the enemy cut him down.
Finian blew a mighty blast on his horn. The enemy paused to hear such a trumpet, then renewed their attack...
The enemy gathered logs and built a pyre. They placed the slain Stormguards on it and a mage lit it with a spell. It burned hot and high and the smoke was seen for miles |
