Merrique quickly read the missive sent by the Matriarch and frowned. With a sigh she resigned herself to the fact that once again she would be forced to revisit a past that had many unknowns as well as things she wished she didn't know. Looking over to the napping child, the frown turned into a slight smile and Merrique felt overwhelming pride for bringing such a child into the world and knew in her heart that he would serve Umbra well. Quietly and with a stealthy grace, Merri laid beside the boy who had fallen asleep in his parents' bed and continued watching his restful moments.
She listened for the sounds of Walter's arrival home. Indeed, they had things to discuss before Shalcross began his formal education. _________________
. . . But the dark is very trustworthy.
It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
