“Rhi…my love?”
Rhiannon blinked and brought a hand to her head, gently holding her forehead.
“Rhiannon…”
Her face turned pale and her hands began to tremble. Fong sprung from the dinner table and rushed to the other side, kneeling next to Rhiannon. He laid one hand on hers and pushed her hair from her face with the other.
“My love…another spell? Come…” He scooped her into his arms and carried her downstairs, laying her carefully on the bed. “You will see the healer today….no questions. I will fetch him immediately.”
……………………
While Fong was gathering the healer, Rhiannon’s breath quickened, beads of sweat popping onto her forehead. From the corner of the room she heard a whisper. She shifted her weak eyes to the corner….to the staff Mortemer had given her just before he passed from this rhelm.
“Mortemer…,” Rhi whispered into the empty room.
“Rhiannon…the rituals I had you perform to protect your baby from possession are working…” the whisper continued from the staff.
“Mort…I am sick…” the sweat began to poor off her face, onto the pillow beneath her head.
“You are fighting the daemons, this is the way of the rituals. Do not fear, my friend.”
“Friend…” Rhi whispered with a gentle smile. The pillow beneath her head now soaked with sweat.
“And remember, Rhiannon…after the wedding – remember where you must go for the remainder of your pregnancy…”
………………………..
“Rhiannon…” She awoke to Fong who was looking worriedly down to her. “The healer is here my love….”
In and out of consciousness, she felt the healer’s hands, heard his gentle voice….
“Lord Fong,” the healer said. “I recommend you postpone the wedding until this spell has passed. Give her a few days.”
Fong nodded and sat on the bed next to Rhiannon, placing a cool cloth on her forehead. _________________
