I thought the Regency was a representative government; one by the people for the people. But it seems that they even lack the ability to listen to people that don't agree with them, instead brushing them off and moving along to the next point of contention. Opposite views are either not heard or ignored. Those without confidence in the government are those without credibility in its arenas, no matter how valid their concerns or how logical their points. A truly representative government would be inclined to hear, and possibly make changes based on, its less satisfied members, but this one steadfastly denies all problems and plods along by itself, casting its people by the wayside in favor of petty politicking, rumormongering, filibusters, and internal squabbles. I recently had the misfortune to attend one of these meetings for tonight, the first time in a long while, and maybe the third since I quit the Regency due to these reasons. I am sorry to report, I found things exactly the same as they were when I left, if not worse.
A government that is governed and controlled only by its own UNELECTED representatives, regardless of the people, is an oligarchy. The will of the people is almost completely ignored in practice, though like most things it may get a great deal of lip service. Civil rights is an excuse for inactivity and indecision on critical issues, and filibusters and partisan bickering block all attempts at anything resembling activity. What is the result for the people? A plague that won't be stopped, a suspect that won't be apprehended until every other city is infected, and a group of indifferent 'Lightbringers' sitting around taking shots at each other and wondering why the world has gone to Hell.
I heard that, after I left in disgust at the massive ignorance of the population, that Martin Willow tried to stage a vote of no confidence in Regent Oryan, who remains to this day more of a mythical figure than an actual leader. Whether having base or not, this simple but controversial proposal was shot down so vocally and so aggressively that Martin was forced to leave in protest. I think that most people not blinded by Regency propaganda would agree with this vote, but I would take it a step further. As a whole, the Regency is failing in its duty to the people. It needs massive restructuring, a capable and active leader, and a final termination to the vendettas many of its members hold against each other. I think we need a vote of no confidence in the Regency itself, but I know it would do no good - Even if the response was a resounding 'YES' the Regency would not change. They are too focused on their own goals, not those of the people.
