Adara's illness had been long and arduous, each day Wisty had done as the doctor commanded putting life preserving medicines into her body. She had sat and read her stories though there was no response, she had treated her as if she was just a sleeping child. Yet in her heart she knew. With every insert of the life preserving drug into her childs arm, she grew weary. Weary of seeing Adara wasting away, barely surviving.
She couldnt let go, she refused to accept the loss of her daughter. She had watched a strong young girl fall into illness, weakness, and then finally a perpetual coma from which it did not seem that she would return. She stared at Zendella often as she laughed and played, so joyful so full of love. Her heart ached for Adara to have the same. So this day, Wisty stayed her hand. No medicine was administered. No life preservation upkept. She wordlessly picked up her small thin daughter, hugging her close and leaving the house she wandered along fire island. Sitting under a tree she spread the tiny girl across her lap. You could see the beautiful ocean lapping at the shore. You could see birds and wisps flutter about. The strong wind blew about them, comforting this mother and her dying child.
Wisty wept, her tears soft as they fell upon Adara's pale cheeks. She had sacrificed so much for her, she loved her so much... Yet this was no life for Adara. Laying in a bed for days, this was no way for a child to live. Wistys heart was breaking and she hugged Adara close. She felt a hand upon her shoulder and a smile shined thru her soft tears. Toren stood silently looking down on his wife and dying child. No words to be spoken, he already knew.
All day they stayed that way, unmoving as dusk slowly began to fall, the two parents silent sentinels guarding their precious daughter. As the first star shown its light in the sky and the moon crested its sweet head above them it shone down on this sad family, with mercy in its arms....
She whispered softly to the air the wind carrying her words and circling in an endless echo around them. I love you Adara, my sweet child, I give thee up to nature where you belong.....
That is when the wind picked up speed and like a vortex it carressed their cheeks. Whispers could be heard of those long dead and Adara, the promised child began to fade.
At first Wisty rubbed her eyes for she felt they were blurry from tears, but to no avail, the fading continued, the childs skin dissapearing the shell that was her body, dissapearing even as her mother held her. Toren still silent he said nothing wrapping his arms around her as Adara faded away.
Faded away into their dreams....
She was gone it seemed, and Wisty wept not moving, until sleep claimed her. Toren picked her up carrying her into the house and laying her upon Adara's own bed. He sat with a heavy sigh, his heart aching to, but his silence reverent. He picked up her favorite toy and pulled it close feeling the soft fur upon it and staring down. Comfort came to him immediately and he could hear Wisty talking and laughing in her dream, talking to their daughter.
She was happy he knew it and she was free to run and be once more. Her parents giving up the hardest thing, sacrificing something far greater than themselves. They had let her go, they had let Adara return to the dreams she loved so much where she could once more live without illness or weakness. Happy healthy and loved forever.
He smiled, dont worry Adara your always with me. His silence broken at last. With that the stuffed animal he held faded to, a final sign, it returned to the child that loved it so and Toren and Wistys lives let her go...., |
