Kale winced yet again, this time through her own self-administering of the growth serum. She let the needle slide free of her skin and sat back in the corner of her deceased mother's bedroom.

Her vision became a bit unfocused as her eyes began to grow and mature. It was then she noticed a faint dull glow on one of the bricks below her mother's desk. She moved closer, crawling to get under the desk. The glowing came more into focus at the close proximity, revealing itself as a rune.

This rune wasn't like the ones in the main hall. In fact, this was the first rune she'd found on this floor at all. She traced it lightly with her clumsy fingers, mouthing the secret name of the rune. It wasn't a rune of power, nor sacrifice. It was simply a rune of movement, and as she whispered it's name her fingers lightly touched the brick almost in reverence. The brick began to slide forward, smoothly and quietly, revealing a hidden drawer.

She nearly clapped her hands in delight at this surprise. Once the drawer was open, she dipped her fingers in to sift through whatever treasure she had discovered. But all her fingers made contact with was a book. She locked her fingers around it in mild disappointment and tugged it free of the compartment.

The book appeared to be like any other average leather bound tome. Never the less, she turned the first page. Her mouth opened in awe at the first words of the book. Not words, but names. She read quickly down the first page, before flipping through page after page to reach the back of it.

Oh mother, you were nothing if not industrious

She mouthed the word "industrious". Now where had she learned that one? No matter, she simply knew it.

She tucked the book into her backpack, she would study the tome back at the barracks. She was very eager to begin reading the records of every Umbran that were filed away in the book. Sy-wen's had been a particularly long section of pages.
