I was originally going to do this on the Umbra Forums only, but thought, heck, why not share with the community?

Starting October 27th 2008, those of you who are bored and waiting for Halloween now have something extra to help pass the time and hopefully, have a little fun!

Each day, a new contest will be posted. Participants will be asked to complete something, then PM me with the results or answers. Winners will be able to choose one of two prizes:

1 million gold on the Atlantic shard

or

A picture of your character made by me

So stay tuned, because the Week of Witching starts on Monday and doesn't end until midnight on Halloween!

OK! I know it was more like 2 weeks haha but I didn't get too much of a turnout for the games. No worries though, I'll be running more like this in the future.

Now to announce the winners!

Contest 1 - Create a Ritual

Both Norture and Dory

Contest 2 - Make art!

Both Dory and Norture (again!)

Contest 3 - Find the hidden pictures

Jonathan Strathmore

The submissions were awesome! Thanks to those who participated. Smile

Look for the next contest in the future...

My apologies, I very much wanted to participate in this as it seemed alot of fun.

Sadly real life hit me hard that week besides losing yet another car, well our last car and having to go out and finance a new one, my work had a huge and very important event.

It was a nightmare surely, but I lived thru it and hope to participate in the enxt one.

Love ya!

The cold hand writing as it's owner looks with confidence upon it's peers. Three days later, they are dead by their own hand, unable to bear the torment of the images flashing through their mind.

A spell for to corrupt the mind of the masses, the written condemned is a spell that will make a simple ink and inkwell that's potency will twist the mind of those near it, until they remember such horrors, they take their own lives. This spell is intense in its working, so much is needed to prepare it

First day
Time - Midnight
Needed items:
-small Pot or Cauldron
-One vial of blood from a swallow
-crushed coal
-1 Feather from the dead swallow
-1 Small orange candle

Take the items to a space associated with death
Take the blood and pour it into the pot.
Use the feather and stir in the crushed coal with the quill tip chanting:
Quote:
For those who know the meaning of pain
For those who seek but never do gain
Feel in your heart a despair begin
To you this sadness will never end

Light the candle, and let the wax drip onto the mix, until it leaves an air tight seal.

Day two
Time, daylight. No clouds allowed, nor a breeze or the spell will fail
Items needed:
-Prior pot, still sealed
-Bone from a homless person
-Dollar bill
-Hat taken from a beggar
-Gold shavings
-Hair from a slave
-Scissors
-Green candle

Take items to a place associated with business. For this, I chose the bathroom in taco bell, so any spot is acceptable.
Break the seal on the pat with the bone. The wax should dissolve and leave the prior formula.
Light the green candle, and light the dollar bill on fire
Let the ashes fall into the hat.
Set the candle aside
Pour the gold shavings into the hat
Use The bone and mix the two together. Some will stick to the bone. Do not remove or shake it off.
Take the scissors, and cut the hair into miniscule pieces, letting the pieces drop into the pot.
Stir the pot with the bone clockwise five times, stirring in the items from the hat.
Place the hat over the cauldron and seal it with the green wax from the candle

Day three
Time, three pm

Items Needed:
-a small inkwell
-Child's sock, worn once
-Picture of a family killed by murder/suicide
-Small piece of afterbirth from a stillborn child
-Nail from a mother of seven boys
-Two pieces of flesh from twins
-A red candle

Go to an abandoneed park with a sandbox.
Put the picture in the sock and barely cover it, making a small hole in the sand
Place Nail, Afterbirth and flesh in the hole
Light the red candle, and use the candle to light the pieces on fire
Place the inkwell over the fire, letting it heat
Chant until the first boil

Quote:
For lives that have been lost
Without a thought to the cost
Let those memories surface
Until we lose all purpose

Once it boils, remove the cauldron, and set the candle in the fire.
Leave the area, letting the candle burn itself out.

The last full moon of December, at three am, open the seal on the pot, and pour the black ink into the inkwell, saying these words.

Quote:
Remember the pain
Remember the hate
Remember the loss
For deat is your fate.

Seal the inkwell quickly. The spell is done, and ready for use.

The Rite of Recognition

Upon the completion of trials and training, a novice being welcomed into Umbra proper shall partake in the Rite of Recognition, a ritual allowing the novice to prove its worth and provide a sense of unity among it and its fellow Umbrans, as well as divining guidence in the form of a vision to inspire future growth. For the rite, the novice will need a bowl and dagger, and if no mages are available it will need a torch and tinder as well.

The first step involves the novice choosing a creature with traits it values, the creature will be used as a symbolic sacrifice (see appendix) which the novice shall kill and use for the rite. The killing must be performed by the novice alone, no attendees may aid in the killing or provide healing to the novice. In the case the novice falls, it will have failed and may be ressurected. The novice should be encouraged to use the most powerful creature it is capable of killing, but must be reminded to choose something within its capability for it shall receive no aid.

Upon selection of a sacrifice, the novice and attending Umbrans shall travel in hunt of a suitable creature to use. Should the novice fell the sacrifice, it shall use the dagger and bowl to collect its own blood. It may choose how it wishes to spill its blood and likely has its own prefered method by this point of its training. The bowl should only be filled by a third or fourth of the novice's blood. Next, the novice must collect the blood of the sacrifice in the bowl, filling it another third or fourth full of blood. Should the sacrifice hold no blood, use a mortar and pestle to grind a piece of its body (such as flesh, bone, or crystal) to dust, which shall be added to the blood mixture. In this case, only one fifth of the bowl should be filled to ensure the mixture does not become a paste. The novice may add more blood as necessary.

Next, the novice shall draw a pentagram upon the ground using the blood mixture, and the sacrifice shall be placed upon it on its back, and positioned so its head, arms, and legs rest on each point. If the sacrifice holds more than five appendages, splay each outwards but ensure the pentagram points hold a head, two arms, and two legs to ensure the rite properly bonds with the five appendage points of a human. Should the sacrifice have tendrils, place its body in the centre of the pentagram and place its tendrils in the five pentagram points. Should the sacrifice have fewer than five or no appendages, place it in the centre of the pentagram and tuck any appendage underneath it; Another method shall be used for it.

Once the sacrifice is placed and the bloods are mixed, the novice must anoint the head, hands, and feet on the pentagram points with the mixture. If the sacrifice has no appendages, annoint five points on its body pointing towards each point of the pentagram. Then, the novice shall anoint itself similarly upon its head, hands, and feet, beginning the bond between the two. The novice shall then take the dagger and carve its name upon the chest of the sacrifice. Should the sacrifice be too small for the name to be fully carved, initials are acceptable. In this rite the purpose of carving is the gesture rather than what is written. We regard our names with a strong association to ourself, the novice carving its name onto the sacrifice will generate a strong mental bond between it and what it is doing.

The novice shall then speak the following loudly to the sacrifice, loudly so their voice carries through the area, so the novice may hear itself. It shall proclaim it has overtaken the sacrifice, and shall specify the specific traits it is superior to the sacrifice with; the traits it used to defeat the sacrifice, "I have overtaken you with my own ferocity. Your power is now mine, extracted from your body to be absorbed by mine. My hands are Umbran, and to Umbra I give my ferocity."

Immediately after, the sacrifice must be reduced to ash. Mage fire is strongly reccomended, to ensure the ashes are purely of the sacrifice. Attending Umbrans may aid in casting if need be. Otherwise, the novice may pile tinder onto the sacrifice and set it aflame. Once the sacrifice is reduced to ash, the novice must take a handful of the ash and mix it in the bowl of blood. If the mixture is too thick, the novice may add more of its own blood to thin it back into a flowing liquid. Next, the novice shall draw a pentagram on its own chest, the ends pointing towards its head, arms, and legs in representation of the pentagram whence the sacrifice burned. The remainder of the mixture shall be consumed by the novice.

As the novice sleeps, it shall have visions of guidance, showing weaknesses, strengths, methods to improve, and future paths it may take. The visions may not make sense immediately, the novice is strongly suggested to transcribe the visions so it may return to them in the future when they may become more relevant. The visions may not be confined to a single night, either. The novice may find its visions spread out throughout a few days or a week. This entirely depends on the individual and holds no significance other than giving insight into the novice's personality.

Appendix:
The novice may have not encountered sacrifice symbolism yet. The following information may be provided as examples of sacrifice symbolism, as well as an explination that the following symbols are not set in stone. If the novice wishes to use a sacrifice for a different purpose than listed, it is well within its right to do so:
Liches and arcane undead of the eastern forest may represent magic, having overcome life itself with their own arcane capability.
Nightmares may represent ferocity, their bodies functioning as a machine of destruction to all who near it.
Devourers of Souls may represent sheer power.
Demons may represent cunning, as they are well known for their attempts at enslaving humans through trickery.
Paladins may represent tenacity and loyalty, although they are our enemy we cannot forget their stronger traits.
Rotting corpses may represent defense, their mindless bodies holding great capability for being torn and ripped apart before the corpse falls, fighting until they are too broken to fight any longer.

Ensure the novice is aware it may choose a sacrifice outside of this list. Malas is littered with beings, from pixies, crystal elementals, the vast undead of our forest, to the unicorns and kirins of the north eastern isle. The concept of sacrifice symbolism is simple enough that the novice should not require further instruction. Let this be a test of the novice's capability to adapt and learn.
