The weeks since the attack seemed to drag on and on, with many days nothing but a blurred memory. Finally, there came a day when Merrique awoke feeling no pain, no fatigue, and thankfully her body moved as it should. She sat up in her bed, smiling to herself.

The Soothsayer, who had been at her side throughout much of the ordeal, agreed that Merrique was ready to return to her duties and her family life without restriction. He simply reminded her to take it easy if the fatigue or dizziness returned, likewise refreshing her memory of just how bad the injury was. A crack in one's cranium was indeed a serious thing.

Although Merrique invited the Soothsayer to stay as a guest of the family, he shook his head and told Merri that his work was over and that he felt it would be best for him to return to Ilshenar for many reasons, and that Walter would be glad to see him go. They discussed ways for Merri to get in touch with him if an emergency arose, bid each other a proper farewell, and with that the wise man took his leave, his meager possessions in tow.

Getting out of bed without having to take special care to not aggravate lingering aches and pains was such a pleasurable experience. Merrique dressed, glad to be free of the baggy robe she'd been wearing in her convalescence. She then went to Walter's office, sat at his desk, and began writing letters that she'd been composing in her head for weeks.

It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
