Vaen and Beo stood quietly in the Moonglow Head Quarters. They reflected on the nights events. Neither had spoken a word to each other since their return from Umbra. In the distance, they could hear the voice of one outraged woman.
Phyrra ran up the stairs into the Headquarters. She hurled two stones, both catching the two quiet men in the chest. Both alarmed, they looked towards her.
"What..the..HELL..do you think you two are doing?" Phyrra screamed at the pair. Neither replied.
Phyrra b-lined it towards Beo. He took a cautious step back and her right hand swung up and caught him in the side of the head. She spun and and swung at Vaen. He may have moved, but she caught him just as he was about to speak.
"I show up to the Den of Sins and see you two run off to the street to fight a couple a trouble makers!" She growled disapprovingly. "Neither of you are in any condition to do such a thing! Vaen, what would your wife say if she knew you were swingin a mace so soon? And Beo, what would your wi..." Phy trailed off. Beo muttered quietly about his wife that had seem to suddenly disappear.
"She knows what I'm like.." Vaen replied defensively.
"Now you listen here! Neither of you should have been fighting this evening! Beowulf has sat alone in some tower, for who knows how long! You..." she glared at Vaen, "suffered a near death heart attack not that long ago! Wulfy was barely able to grip his mace, and you shouldn't have been running around with a bad heart!"
Beo and Vaen both kicked at the ground, silently. Both proud, both confident, both wise enough not to press an angry woman.
"How long has it been since you've fought, Wulfy?" She questioned. Beowulf looked up, attempting to count. He looked towards her and shrugged gently.
Phyrra spun on her heel to face Vaen. "You?"
Vaen simply shrugged. "We have fight left in us Phy. You know that. It's what we do."
"I'm not saying you don't! I'm saying you two arn't in any condition at the moment to do so, though! You haven't the proper time to heal, and Wulfy hasn't been aggressive in who knows how long."
"We don't have all that much time to waste." Beo replied, regaining his confidence. "I'm getting too old, too quickly. Along with Vaen. He may be younger than I am, but years of strain are catching up. The more time we waste, the less we have."
"Then take it slow!" She demanded. "It doesn't matter how many great, astonishing things, you two have done. Everyone in Sosaria knows that. They know what you two can do. Just because a couple of 'Blue Roses'" or whoever they were, start talkin at ya..." She took a moment to catch her breath, "Doesn't mean you two have to take arms."
Beo and Vaen both shrugged towards each other.
"Perhaps we got a head of ourselves, a little." Vaen admitted, reluctantly.
"Mave needs you in prime condition. I suggest you two quit wasting time with little duels and get yourselves together! Take it slow." Phyrra said, more of a suggestion than a demand now. "You may have one or two last battles in you, but make sure you're ready for it."
Beo looked at Vaen. Both their lips curled into smiles.
"Guess we should get at 'er then eh?" Vaen said enthused.
"Back to the ol' drawing board." Beo chuckled lightly. |

You must admit there had never been love lost between Merci d'Rue and Beowulf Thormear, they were not friends. Yet as a fighter she had a certain amount of respect for the man.
Vaen, well he was your typical Shining star as he once told Merci, and she didnt really know the man. Yet something innately within her wished for thier success in this battle.
It was odd for Merci to feel irritated when they did not and she sought to reach out to Beowulf even tho her gut told her to stay put.
Beowulf, you were just a bit rusty you will be back on your game in a week.
She shook her head, why was she saying this, what did she care, Beowulf and Vaen did not have the respect for her as she did for them so why would she bother. Yet she couldnt help it she had had to pick a side and instinctively had turned towards them.
Perhaps the lack of response was what she needed to be taught a lesson as Beowulf said nothing to her and walked away. Her comfort was an insult to him she realized that to late. She put it aside, it had been fitting of a send off, that duel would be had before she left. Yet she had not been the dueler.
If one thing came from all of this she realized that she herself in her tireless effort and preparations to leave had not trained in some time and she resolved that she would train even as they traveled even though she would be exhausted and muscles ached. She would stay on top of her game... _________________ May destiny guide you... |
