After the party hosted at the Den for the dual purpose of welcoming home the Matriarch and wishing some journeying Umbrans well, Merrique went home and laid down on the fur rug before the fireplace.
Overall she was pleased with the outcome, though a little dismayed that some people seemed unable to set aside their nonsense for even a little while. Most of all, she was pleased and grateful to Walter for managing to talk Davaran into joining the festivities. It was good to see the black and gold clad men in the city, no matter how few, and all being peaceful.
Naturally, the woman understood politics and their importance in societies. But as a gypsy, her entire outlook on life and living was often different than others; this included a general disdain of politicking in general. Simply put, her people were generally overlooked unless someone needed to pin a crime on someone when there were no true suspects. Though able to hold grudges like nobody's business, most gypsies were also able and willing to set aside differences for important events.
Seeing the Matriarch home, and the warriors off, was indeed and important event for Umbra. Merrique felt satisfied that with the help of her Umbran son and Sia and Yia, the party was overall a rousing success.
Her only real regret was that Walter was unable to attend. He said he had business to attend to, and Merrique made a point to avoid any questions regarding the nature of his work; he would offer what he felt was necessary.
Drowsing as she laid in the dark room whose only light was from the hearth, she complimented herself on the surprise and pleasure the carefully arranged gifts brought to their guests.
With a languid stretch, she decided it would be best to go to the bedroom to see if Walter had returned, and thank him for his diplomatic abilities and the resulting success of the Sanctan visit. Walter rarely expressed that he felt respect for many men, and it was important for Merrique to include somebody he had mentioned to be a decent person.
She tossed a few logs onto the fire, and went to find her husband. _________________
. . . But the dark is very trustworthy.
It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
