His father’s words suddenly clicked in his head. Vian had been up most of the night trying to rationalize the actions of the Lord Commander, to no avail until now.

“Of course” he thought. “That is the only logical explanation.”

“Once is happenstance”

A week ago, Vian had walked in on the Lord Commander in a meeting with two Umbrans. At the time he thought little of it.

“Twice is coincidence”

The Lord Commander had informed the troops they would be escorting a break away group of Lycans from Umbra through Sanctus territory. This was so they could settle in Northern Malas. Whatever they we calling themselves now, they would remain Umbrans in Vians book. Allowing the enemy to flank Sanctus was a critical tactical error.

“Three times, a trend”

Joining in a celebration for the Matriarch of Umbra’s return was just mind blowing to Vian. According to Sanctus history, the people of Umbra, whichever name they had gone by, had been enemies of Sanctus since before the Kingdom was even named.

Any hope of sleep now lost, Vian had a new task in front of him.

Figure out how the Umbrans were controlling the Lord Commander.
