Staring at the hairline cracks in the ceiling above the bed in the rented room, Sylvan realized with a combination of dismay and regret that there was a letter she should write and get to Umbra immediately. With an inward groan, she hauled herself out of the bed and procured pen and paper from the innkeeper. Hastily, she scribbled out a note and hired a messenger to assure the note's arrival in the dark city. This done, she flopped back onto the bed and resumed staring upward.
