Eddard sat at the bar of the Blue Lotus Tea House finishing what seemed like his fifteenth cup of sake topped off with a bottle of Zento's finest liquor. He had been drinking much of the day even though he had made a promise to himself that he would quit. A promise he could not even keep to himself. He had always loved the feeling of the alcohol as it clouded his mind and made him forget his sorrows. There were many things in his short life that he had done, most he regretted. And it was these things he had always drank so heavily to forget but never could. It was not unusual for him to spar after drinking and nothing was unusual about it on this day either.
"Care for a spar Edd?" A simple question and one he had never turned down to this day. Why start now? He stood stumbling outside into the street close behind Freelance. He stood preparing himself a few moments. Foxy had attempted to intervene. Perhaps she had never seen Eddard this drunk at his spars. And he could not deny the fact that he had never fought this intoxicated. Ignoring her pleas they continued preparing and soon their swords clashed. In his drunken haze his sword slipped from his grasp attempting to block a blow. He watched the sword fall and it seemed to take an eternity to hit the ground before his partners sword penetrated his skin, tearing through flesh and bone. The ground rushed up to swallow him and he hit hard. What had happened? He could not remember where he was or what had happened. All that he knew was there was this pain in his chest greater than any pain he had ever felt. He reached up to touch his chest and his hands came soaked in blood. They were trying to bandage him but he knew the wound was to deep. It would only be a matter of a minute or two before he bled out he reckoned. As the darkness began to envelope him he felt his body lifted and whisked away......(Too be continued) |
