Using great care, Hikiko made the final adjustments on the obi she selected to compliment the silken kimono she cherished . . . a gift from one she held dear. Satisfied with the outcome, she left the rooms in which she resided with the air of one floating in a blissful haze of satisfaction. Not needing to look up as she walked, she soon found herself at the small pool to the west, in which resided the koi she so enjoyed looking at.

Upon the spartan bench she sat, and waited to see where her thoughts would lead.

The minutes melted away and soon she focused on the lotus that floated on the gently rippling water.

How like our lives, this flower. Fleeting, delicate. So susceptible to the ripples upon the waters of life. Yet the flowers persevered, dying after so brief a time here only to be born again to repeat the pattern set forth by the powers that guided all things of the world.

A nearby movement broke the trance-like calm that enveloped her in this moment in time.
