|
Having left the tea room for an evening walk around the city, Hikiko walked toward the bridge. As was typical of her demeanor, she seemed to be enveloped in a shroud of blissful peace.
It was peace she felt, of the most sacred kind. Earlier she had been to her 'secret' garden, and offered her prayers for a friend's success in their endeavors.
The habit she had of walking along with her gaze averted turned out to be something that would work against her this night.
A terrible growling sound lifted her rudely out of her solitary state of quietude. Her immediate response was to stop, to cease all movement. Before her along the path stood a bake-kitsune, its tails swishing defiantly, its eyes glowing their feral and terrible light. Hikiko stood frozen along the path, unable to defend herself or call for help.
As if the Kami looked over her, a guard appeared and left the beast slain at his feet.
The terrified girl took one look at the corpse lying in a pool of its own blood, emitted a terrified scream, and fainted dead away. |
