The sun was nearly rising when Kinn finally returned to his woodland home. He had been out all night, doing the bidding of his new “Boss”, and was cold, wet and weary. Part of him wanted to shed his soaking wet armor and go straight to bed, but he knew that was not possible. He was much too disciplined for that. He set to work cleaning the mud from his armor and hanging it properly so it could dry. He then dried and oiled his blades and checked his ninja belt to make sure his shuriken were not wet enough to rust. He decided he would apply new coats of poison to everything later in the day after he had slept a bit. After all, a fatigue-induced poisoning accident would be a most embarrassing way for an assassin to die.
As he sat at his desk the weariness he felt caused his mind to wander to things that he had not had much time to thoroughly contemplate. Weighing most heavily on his mind were the reasons why he joined the Syndicate. Kinn had always been a loner. He liked being his own boss; taking whatever jobs he wanted and getting paid well for a job well done. There was no doubt that he was good at what he did. The symbols of wealth spread around his secluded tower were testament to his reputation and skill as a contract killer.
But Kinn was a collector of information as well and every bit as good a spy as he was an assassin. He first heard about the chaos the Syndicate was causing in Moonglow and Zento almost by accident. He still only had bits and pieces of the story, but he saw an opportunity to offer his unique information gathering services to the Syndicate leader (in exchange for a healthy fee, of course) and he decided to take it. How it led to him taking up the Syndicate cause and operating under their banner he still didn’t really understand. That Boss man, whatever his real name was, was strangely convincing. He spoke of spreading chaos and unseating the Humanist threat that existed in Moonglow. Kinn had never been one for causes, but it all sounded too good to miss. The Boss also mentioned profits to be made, which was a language that Kinn understood very well.
So here he was sitting in his chair as the sun was just starting to rise. He was tired from sneaking around all night. He was soaking wet and chilled to the bone from the miserable storms that just happened to hit Verity Isle the minute he arrived. Even with magic-assisted travel and decades of stealth training it was no easy task to spy on Moonglow and Zento in one night. Bad weather and the constant threat of discovery by the organized Moonglow Militia or the ninjas of the Zento clans only made the task that much harder. And now, instead of going to sleep, Kinn knew there was one more thing that he had to do.
He reached into the desk and pulled out a parchment, pen and inkwell and began to write his report to The Boss….. |
