The liquor burned as it rushed down his throat, but he'd emptied the entire bottle. Valen tossed it aside. He slumped on the ground, staring unfocusedly at the dank interior of the stone ruins. His mind swam, and was fighting a losing battle against the roiling in his stomach. Casting all of that aside, he slowly climbed to his feet, leaning on the wall to keep his balance. Since he and Jessie had last parted, he'd been working out how to do this; with the least amount of pain.

His coat lay to one side, tossed carelessly. He'd run a leather strap through the spine of his spellbook to wear over his shoulder, and had a healer prepare a cloth sling. The lies came easily for why these things needed to be done. Everything was prepared. He recalled a book he had read, penned by the mage Gilforn, that had related an accident involving moongate travel. Swaying, he took a step forward. Clutched in his right hand was an etched runestone, marked earlier this evening. Overenunciating to combat his condition, he recited the words of power.

"Vas Rel Por."

The shimmering gate appeared in front of him, and he staggered back to the wall. Across the room, the moongate's counterpart had sprung into being. He released the runestone, letting it clatter to the floor. Slowly, he reached out with his left hand, letting it pass into the moongate up to the wrist. There he remained, hesitation written clearly on his face. He could see his hand, trembling, on the other side of the gate. He closed his eyes, and spoke with the same overenunciation.

"An Grav."

The gate vanished, and with a simple pop, he could no longer feel anything beyond his left wrist. In a rush, his left arm felt cold, and dull. He was bleeding. He was bleeding far more than he had expected. He could feel his head swimming, and nausea overtook him. He fell to his knees and vomited harshly onto the dirt floor. Clumsily, he grabbed a flask from the floor behind him. His remaining hand felt numb, but he was able to remove the stopper. He threw his head back, downing as much of the yellow liquid as he could. Panting heavily, he felt a rush of dizziness. He fell sideways on the floor, landing on his right side. Rolling onto his back, he took a yard of cut cloth and wrapped it carelessly around his left arm. He let it fall to the floor: The healing potion had slowed the blood flow, but far from stopped it. The tan-coloured cloth was quickly soaked, dark and red. Valen lay his head back on the floor, eyes clenched shut, and an inhuman screech passed from him.

It was done.

An excerpt from Gilforn's "The Definitive Gate":

"Given as a moongate acts as a connection between two places, an object in contact will transport gradually, as through air, unlike the effect caused by means of magical teleportation. Knowing this, an object that is not yet fully traveled through a given gate is connected only by means of said gate. If the mana that powers a gate wears out, the effect is a slow dissolution, the side effect being a return of a half-traveled object to its' original location. However, as I have witnessed, if a gate is forcibly banished by means of a Dispel effect, the dissolution is instantaneous, and no return is enacted. Indeed, the connection between the two parts is simply severed."
