Beating the kitsune about the arms and head with a rolled up wanted poster was immensely dissatisfying to Merrique. More frustrating was her inability to get a reasonable explanation for him having murdered her distant kin in Mazewood. Merrique felt incredibly violated by his actions, along with his words.
We are supposed to be family, she thought. So this is what it boils down to? It is acceptable to murder family without good reason?
Her people were many things, she realized. Many of those things not considered acceptable or good by most polite society. But they were still her family, no matter how distant. Gods knew she had her hands full trying to raise one of those distant cousins and only finding the girl was more trouble than she initially realized. Stealing, promiscuity, drugs, who only knew what else the girl brought to her family's doorstep.
It was while standing on the western city bridge with Shalcross, speaking quietly of her upset and frustrations, that the outsiders arrived with an agenda: they wanted the kitsune...supposedly for questioning, but more likely to be taken into custody. Shalcross did his best to defend the otherwise empty city. But one young man, no matter how proud, strong, or trained, can hold off such immense forces. His effort was valiant and true, and certainly his father would have been proud to see how he managed himself.
Watching the city overrun, hearing the insulting words of the outsiders were bad enough insults. Overhearing that Shalcross was 'down and in a secure area' was more than she could bear. Merrique left the area, seemingly unseen by the enemies, and stood atop the mountain overlooking the city. With a heavy heart, she returned to her home.
And waited. _________________
. . . But the dark is very trustworthy.
It's always as dark as you thought it was.
And you don't have to work at staying there.
All you have to do is survive it.
And I've been doing that forever.
