Kinn sat, legs crossed, in quiet meditation on the roof of the tower.

The sun was just beginning to set and soon night would be upon the land. Then it would be his time. Kinn had the uncanny ability to move unseen even in broad daylight, but the shadows of the night made it so much easier. Besides, something felt right about the darkness.

There were many things weighing on Kinn’s mind this evening. He found himself questioning his reasons for joining “The Boss” and helping further the cause of the Syndicate daily—but tonight those questions were foremost on his mind.

This isn’t you, Kinn thought to himself.

You’ve always played by your own rules. You only ever played the games you knew you would win. It’s what has kept you alive, even thriving, in such a dangerous profession for so long. Why now are you clinging to such a lost cause?

Kinn knew he didn’t really have an answer.

The Boss was a charismatic Drow---probably the most speech-gifted person Kinn had ever met. The Boss had a plan. He had goals. He seemed so certain and so resourceful that Kinn believed those goals could be achieved. It would mean wealth. It would mean chaos. It would finally mean some meaningful opposition to the ever-growing “lightsworn” vermin that were springing up and multiplying like ratfolk all over the land.

And more importantly, the chaos that The Boss meant to cause would mean plenty of contract opportunities (on both sides of the conflict, if he played his cards right) for someone with Kinn’s unique talents.

Kinn had to face reality. He knew that ultimately, it was his own greed that drew him to join the Syndicate.

But had his greed finally blinded him and caused him to bet on a game he could not hope to win?

Kinn wasn't sure of much anymore, but he was certain that he would have a much clearer picture of his situation after tomorrow night.

(more to come as events unfold….)

(Part two)

“She was certainly an interesting figure,” Kinn said dispassionately, “and the other one was quite a character as well.”

A small, Sindicate raiding party had just taken out a caravan on it's way to Luna. It was a job that they were paid to do. The woman who ordered the hit, and the recovery of a very specific item from one of the caravan passengers, had come by the Spider Kiss Trading Company later that night to deliver the second part of the payment and collect her prize. Another unusual guest was present as well. Both women had just left the building after talking with the Boss.

The Boss just chuckled.

“Who were they?” Kinn asked.

“Who were who?” The Boss replied.

“You know who I’m talking about. Your friends that just left---the doll-obsessed girl and the other one with the pale skin. Don’t think I didn’t notice her other…features…either.”

The Boss just looked at Kinn with a smile and shrugged his shoulders.

“I don’t really want to know, do I?” Kinn could take a hint.

“For now,” The Boss replied, “It might be safer for everyone involved if you didn’t know specifics. Just trust me when I tell you that they are both powerful people who represent powerful houses. And they pay their contracts out in a timely manner, as you have seen tonight.”

“So we will help the doll-girl with her plans, then?” Kinn asked

"I have to think on it some more." The Boss had a mischievous smile as he gave Kinn the answer.

Kinn knew by now that smile usually meant trouble.
