The night was waning and the day's efforts in Tokuno weighed heavily on the back of the former Field Marshal.
Since the events of the Inaugural Ball, the return to the Empire to assist his former legion proved a daunting task. The denizens of the land were becoming more fierce. The rumors of shrouded apparitions of great power in the islands were found true before his eyes. Disease...death...decay, words to describe a foreboding sense of evil that enveloped the once peaceful islands.
But this night was worse...
Duties completed for the eve in the islands, the eldest M'real returned home to Britannia to bandage his wounds and provide reports alongside the new Grand Marshal - T'zure Armayan. They emerged from the magical moongate overlooking the Britain roadway and headed East to the guild office.
"I reckon I aught not return to those lands once our contracts is completed, " said the new Marshal as he strode with a limp; his battleaxe strung to his back. The words were barely audible to Tay as he sat weary on the back of his steed. "Tay...thou'rt thinkin' straight, aye?"....no response. Removing his battleaxe from the reins on his back, the Marshall dropped in front of the horse which quickly reared. Stunned, Tay pulled hard to straighten his beast which returned a series of guttural curse words.
"Ye gone mad man!?", he said as his steed finally calmed; making quick steps where it finally rested. T'zure laughed a hearty laugh - his clenched mouth strained as the laughter wracked his stiff body. "Thou doth nay look well my friend. Please, take the horse - would do thee better than I."
Tay began to drop over the side of the horse when a figure emerged from moongate. The man's flowing grey beard and crimson robes showed years of wear. He sighed heavily and began towards the men - leaving heavily on a large wooden staff as wrinkled as he.
He began to speak as he neared, his voice low and stuttering "H..Hail to thee b..boys. Ye help an o..old man, aye?"
"Aye old one, how can'st I assist thee?", T'zure stepped forward, extending a hand and helping the old man to a nearby rock.
"I...I've come f..far. Unfortunately my magic...my magic doesn't work quite so w...well. I h...hail from the out...outskirts of Buc's Den. I was...t...told that Britain was the home of a line of blood with....with which ties to...Yew....the Abbey." The elder erupted into a series of wracking coughs. Holding a finger up, he reached into his robes and pulled a small piece of root and began to chew quickly. In a matter of minutes, the coughing ceased and he continued.
"A family, tied to the Abbey in years past. I was part of group of adventurers from Serpent's Hold which saught to recover a lost artifact from that family - the Cross of Arutan; lost some years back after it's recovery".
Tay gasped...he dropped to his knee and layed a hand on the old man's shoulder. "M'real..."
The elder smiled..."Aye lad...I knew t'was thee when I approached. Ye doth look much like the priestess herself. The cross...tis not lost my boy...they found her.
Tay's shoulders dropped. The troubles of the day were lost...his thoughts now rested on the Artifact he and his fellow adventures fought and died to obtain so many years ago and were lost. It was found...it's well...it survived.
"Who are you?"
"My name is not important, but I was sent to give you this information and charge thee with a task. 6 fornights ago, I was part of an expedition to Fire Island where it was rumoured that a earth shattering tremors were shaking the very foundation - thus causing rifts in the island and uncovering tombs of ages lost. While there, in the mountains south near Hythloth - we uncovered the remains of what seemed a resting spot of a long dead soul. We found trinkets and other items of small value, but found a book. A book that contained precise locations on the island of where an item could be found...an item that was used by a former priestess - Arutan - to battle the undead soul of - a necromancer - that led a group known as the Order of the Shadow Hand."
Tay began to breath heavily - his eyes grew and he became more anxious with each word that the elder spoke.
"That item is said to have been infused with the magic of the cross...that it's essence will forever link it to that relic. To find that item - is to find the cross my boy."
The elder pulled a ripped and torn book from his pouch and handed it to Tay. The title was worn - but still readable and his hands trembled - he looked it over and looked up at the old man. He read it aloud...
"The eternal imprisonment of heroics - autobiography of Priestess Arutan M'real of Yew"
"Search it well lad and find the point of fulfilling thy destiny. That is my charge and I must return home. I bid thee well boy." The old man rose and turned, heading back to the moongate."
"Wait, how dis't ye find me!?"
"The great wiseman of The Lycaeum knew thy ancestory..."
"But who are thou?"
"A man with many sins to make right...." and with those last words the man vanished through the moongate.
Tay turned to stare at T'zure who stood motionless and wide-eyed as he held the reigns of the horse. Tay opened the journal and a piece of parchment fell to the ground, picking it up he read the scribbled writing.
167° 32' N, 121° 1' W
Taking pen to parchment - Tay began to write a message. He showed it to T'zure and asked him to began copying.
"We need these posted throughout the realm. I cannot do this alone...."
