Standing in front of the nearly-completed building, Itannar admired the work done thus far. He had dipped deeply into his own considerable gold stockpile to purchase a reasonably good blueprint for the Academy and the best workers money could buy to build it. Within a few weeks, all things being equal, it would be completed and the first classes could begin.
He had already drawn up a list of prospective subjects and teachers, some recommended to him by the Lord Regent Thraxas. He had voiced disapproval of some of them, but his objections were quelled or explained away and he was forced to give in.
"We have to have a liberal mindset, Archwarden," Thraxas had told him. "We want no censorship here. An institution such as this must not be silenced on the whims of those who might be the objects of the teaching, or who disagree however strongly. I will allow any subject be taught within the bounds of common sense and reason, if a respectable or noteworthy teacher can be found." And that was the end of that.
Itannar looked at the list he had been given and had helped to create:
- Magnate Isk - Humanis Philosophy and Reasoning
- Cal Hurst (tentative) - Martial Arts
- Arakad - Magery Theorum or History of Ilshenar
- Ceinwyn - Sosarian History & Lore
They were just the beginning.
The only thing that bothered him now were the reports of castle renovation; the one he had just vacated. He had gotten word that his immediate superior was building something ominous-sounding atop the castle; something he had claimed was for the execution of criminals. Itannar knew well the history of House Thraxanduril (though he had only recently discovered Thrax had a twin brother) and none of it was very good at least in the beginning. He knew that Thrax had had a change of heart and was edging closer to an acceptance of the Virtues as evidenced by his plan to build the Academy, but had then vanished suddenly leaving his brother in charge. He hoped Thraxas was different; that he did not pursue the vile religion of Oggaroth, and that none of his current building projects were intended for that. He was willing to believe, for now, that Thraxas was a true and honest sort, unlike his brother, and would rule Yew well under the guidance of the Virtues, especially Justice.
But his heart beat uneasily still. _________________ -The bonds of fellowship are forged in the flames of adversity- |
