A letter arrives for Duchess Molly from Kayla Ariesus.
"Your grace,
Nae saian luume' (it has been too long) cousin.
I write thee out of desperation and peril. A tragedy has occurred of which I play a part. I must speak to thee face to face soon concerning this matter. Please call upon me at thy earliest convenience that we may discuss this. I shall await thy word in Heartwood. I am well known there; have thy courier speak to any of our people and they will find me.
Tenna' san' (Until then)
Kayla" _________________ -The bonds of fellowship are forged in the flames of adversity- |

Amin melyanna hin, (My dear child)
It has been far too long. I have been suffering a slight sickness as of late. The darkness has brought me many sleepless nights. My nightmares have left me feeling quite ill. It is good to hear from you and my appologies for not answering sooner. I have sent my messenger to make some arrangements for us to meet, now that I am feeling a bit better.
Send word of a time and day.
mela, (love)

Markham Englis, a royal courier, found his way into Heartwood but was redirected to a small house not far from its moongate. As he approached the building he noticed several armed men in crimson and black livery stationed about it, or patrolling the perimeter. Two stood on either side of the single doorway. They were very alert, and thus instantly spotted him as he moved close. One advanced to meet him and drew his sword. "Hold! Stand fast! State your business!" he ordered bringing the sword up to a readied, waist-level position, though he did not as yet point it at him.
"I am a royal courier to the Duchess Molly of Luna," Markham calmly replied, extending his hand which held an official authorization to perform his duty on her behalf. He folded his hands and awaited the decision.
The guard took the document, read it hastily and handed it back to him. "Give me the letter. I am required to relay any and all correspondence to the Lord Regent that is directed to the defendant Kayla."
The courier frowned. "I beg your pardon? I am authorized only to deliver this letter to Kayla Ariesus who just happens to be a cousin of the Duchess. I do not think she would be happy with me if I gave it to anyone else but her. Surely you can sympathize with my position?"
Now the guard frowned. "I don't care if you come with gold dust from a fairy princess," (hearing that, the other guards chuckled). "The letter goes to the Regent first. If he deems it permissable for her to read it, well and good, but either way, you may not see the defendant!" He raised his sword a bit higher.
"Defendant? She is accused of criminal activity?"
"That is none of your concern. Give me the letter... now."
Markham was torn. His orders were to deliver the Duchess's reply to Kayla personally, not to some guard. He did not know the contents, but assumed it was urgent enough for her to receive it regardless of who else may read it. With a short, sharp, sigh he handed over the letter to the guard, but not without making a parting shot. "The Duchess will hear of this, I assure you. Might I have your name?"
The guard snatched the letter from him and grinned. "Like I care... and no, you may not. Now get out of here before I arrest you for trespassing."
Maintaining a cool head and diplomatic stance, he bowed curtly turned and departed.
The guard summoned his personal pigeon, affixed the letter to its leg, and sent it off to find the Regent. _________________ -The bonds of fellowship are forged in the flames of adversity- |
