"It seems these days the Regent is more concerned with collecting awards and titles rather than governing. Soon he'll rival Dutchess Willow. He'll need a page to just carry his breatplate."
Dealthagar chuckled silently to the comment, watching the loyalists reactions. He looked next to him, to see Lilyth Noir shaking her head in bemusement. Their eyes met, and she winked.
It would have been odd to an outsider seeing the meeting. Nearly a half dozen loyalists, the High Justice of Yew, and Dealthagar, the Technocrat Primus of Sosaria. He and the Awakening had all but been branded the number one enemy to the crown, yet they had been officially cleared of charges weeks earlier. He sat in on the meeting, mostly at the word of Lilyth and a few Loyalists who Dealthagar had good dealings with.
Lilyth leanded over and whispered in his ear. "I don't miss these meetings, I tell you."
His shoulders shook in laughter and he whispered back. "I can't imagine why."
She jabbed him in the ribs with an elbow. "Civil war, indeed. Do you think it will come to it?"
He shrugged. "I have heard rumblings of it since i returned. For the first time, i care not. I tire of these political games."
"Truly? I thought you lived for it."
"Perhaps an age ago. I am tired of it." He looked up as the meeting began to break up. "Shall we go?"
"Am I safe with you?" She smirked as he grimaced at her. A gate opened, and they found themself in front of Poet's Garden. She looked around. "A tavern? You?"
"You forget, my dear. I used to be a fixture at the Hungry Halfling and the Serpent Cross." He held the door open for her and they entered.
"I remember. You and your ever present pitcher of water. Didn't want to 'pollute' your body. I always found that odd for a necromancer."
He waved to the waitress as they sat down. "The rest of the bottle from earlier." She nodded and reached under the counter, quickly walking over with two flutes and a bottle of Yewish Wine. He smiled at Lilyth's reaction. "Times change."
"I see that."
They sat and chit-chatted for hours, reminicing about the older days. Sharing memories of old friends and enemies. Slowly, gradually, talk returned to the present. Dealthagar held up his hand showing four fingers. "Dayel, Kronos, Huma and you. Four regents I have served under. Four regents I have shed blood for, four regents i have spilt my own blood for."
"They don't know you. Most of them don't remember the Yew-Caina war or the Battle for Trinsic, yet your reputation from those days still lingers." She paused, emptying her glass. "Plus The Dark Awakening does carry quite a reputation these days."
"Not to mention Molly's ranting." He flipped the empty bottle into the fireplace. "She acts like I cut off one of her fingers again."
"With the Order of the Ebon Skull gone, people are jumping at shadows. Nobody wants to live under the shadow of that evil again." She smiled. "Besides, it's your rogush charm she fears."
He chuckled, feeling his ears and neck grow warm. He looked at Lily's face, studying it. "How long have we known each other?"
"Long enough for you to know better than to ask that. It would be like admitting how old I was." She giggled and fingered the empty glass.
He waved to the barkeep for another bottle. "That long, eh?" the barmaid shook her head and pointed to the clock on the mantle. "You want to pop back to my manor? I think i have a few bottles from last years Festival of the Grape." He offered his elbow.
She stood, took it firmly and smiled warmly. "That would be lovely."
The red gate opened and they passed into the snow of Dagger Isle.
